Maasai Mara National Reserve

One of our best African tours, this 9-day safari kicks off in Kenya’s Tsavo East then on to Tsavo West, Amboseli, Lake Naivasha, and finally to the celebrated Masai Mara National Reserve – four of East Africa’s top game parks.

The tour begins in the coastal city of Mombasa and ends in Nairobi. Tsavo East National Park is located about 160 km approximately 2½ hours’ drive from Mombasa.

The park forms the largest protected area in Kenya and is home to most of the larger mammals, vast herds of dust –red Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Lion, Leopard, Pods of Hippo, Crocodile, Waterbucks, Lesser Kudu, Gerenuk, and the prolific birdlife features 500 recorded species.

Next, we drive to the nearby Tsavo West National Park, the largest park in Kenya and one of the biggest in Africa. Tsavo West has a variety of wildlife, such as the eastern black Rhinoceros, Hippopotamus, Cape Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard, and a large pride of Lion.

Other smaller animals can be spotted in the park, such as the Bushbaby, Hartebeest, Lesser Kudu, and Masai Giraffe. Some rare species include White-tailed Mongoose, Genet cat, Jackal, Hyrax, Dik-dik, Porcupine, and Oryx.

The journey continues to Amboseli National Park. This scenic park is known as one of the best places to get up close to big herds of Elephants, making for amazing photos with Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. Amboseli Park hosts a variety of big mammals and an array of birds.

Amboseli wildlife includes leopards, cheetahs, Wild dogs, Buffalo, elephants, giraffes, Zebra, lions, crocodiles, Mongoose, Hyrax, Dik-dik, and Lesser Kudu. Over 420 bird species have been recorded here.

The next safari destination is Lake Naivasha – a serene freshwater lake that is one of a series of lakes formed by the Great Rift Valley. This beautiful lake is home to exceptional numbers of water birds.

A boat ride on Lake Naivasha takes you up close with Hippos and a guided walking safari on Crescent Island allows you to see various animals, including Giraffe, Zebra, Thompson’s, and Grant’s Gazelles, Waterbuck, Eland, Wildebeest, and many bird species.

We continue our trip up the beautiful Rift Valley of East Africa to the famous Masai Mara National Reserve. The Mara is world-famous for the massive wildebeest herds and numerous other herbivores, such as Thompson’s gazelles, Zebra, and Eland, that migrate here annually.

This spectacular Wildebeest Migration, also known as the Great Migration, takes place between July and October. All members of the “Big Five” (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Rhino) are found here all year round.

Game drives are the most popular activity in the Masai Mara, but other activities include hot air ballooning, nature walks, photographic safaris, and cultural experiences.
