The trip begins in the morning with a visit to the Ruins of Gedi, a National Monument and museum. Gedi is located south of Malindi, about 16km (10 miles) from the town, just off the Malindi-Mombasa Road in the Arabuko Sokoke Forest. Gedi Ruins was an important Swahili-Arab settlement that was abandoned during the 16th or 17th century.

Taking a guided tour through the ruins and the museum will teach you a lot of interesting things about the fascinating culture of the Swahili people and the ancient town they constructed. Next, we visit the Watamu Marine Park – a magnificent 10 square kilometer UNESCO Biosphere reserve popular for snorkelers and scuba divers. Here you will enjoy the white sandy beaches, snorkeling, water skiing, windsurfing, and glass-bottomed boat tours.

We have lunch at Hemingways Watamu or at the Papa Remo Beach Restaurant. After lunch and some rest, we proceed to the Hell’s Kitchen (local residents know it as Nyari) found in the village of Marafa. Marafa is a geological formation that was caused by erosion of the sandstone escarpment, revealing a unique set of vibrantly colored rock layers, from whites to pinks, oranges, and deep crimsons. Guided walks are offered where you will be told of folklore and natural history. Later we returned to our hotel.

* 12 miles from Malindi is the town of Gedi. Despite Gedi’s close proximity to Malindi; it was never a focus of any European activity. In fact, Gedi was allegedly an invisible town never mentioned in any manuscripts or writing. Swahili Muslims established a mosque, and homes and ran the town.
