Gedi Museum Tour | Watamu Marine Park Snorkeling | Hell's Kitchen Nature Hike

Malindi Day Tour Gedi Ruins Watamu Marine Park Hell’s Kitchen is an exciting 1-day excursion from Malindi or Watamu hotels and covers 3 Malindi must-see attractions; Gedi Ruins, Watamu Marine Park & Hells Gate Kitchen.

The trip begins in the morning with a visit to the Ruins of Gedi, a National Monument and museum. Gedi is located south of Malindi, about 16km (10 miles) from the town, just off the Malindi-Mombasa Road in the Arabuko Sokoke Forest. Gedi Ruins was an important Swahili-Arab settlement that was abandoned during the 16th or 17th century.

Taking a guided tour through the ruins and the museum will teach you a lot of interesting things about the fascinating culture of the Swahili people and the ancient town they constructed. Next, we visit the Watamu Marine Park – a magnificent 10 square kilometer UNESCO Biosphere reserve popular for snorkelers and scuba divers. Here you will enjoy the white sandy beaches, snorkeling, water skiing, windsurfing, and glass-bottomed boat tours.

We have lunch at Hemingways Watamu or at the Papa Remo Beach Restaurant. After lunch and some rest, we proceed to the Hell’s Kitchen (local residents know it as Nyari) found in the village of Marafa. Marafa is a geological formation that was caused by erosion of the sandstone escarpment, revealing a unique set of vibrantly colored rock layers, from whites to pinks, oranges, and deep crimsons. Guided walks are offered where you will be told of folklore and natural history. Later we returned to our hotel.

Trip Highlights

* The glass boat ride in the marine park takes you out to sea, where you will be able to see some sensational fish. If you wish, you can snorkel too!

* Malindi was made famous after Vasco da Gama’s stopover in 1498. In Malindi, you will see narrow alleys in the old part of town where the old houses have been lived for centuries.

* One of the oldest East African churches still stands strong; the Church of St. Francis Xavier still stands strong across from Vasco da Gama’s pillar, where he carved the Christian cross. Also extant is the Juma’a mosque, which was misused as a haven for slave trading until the mid-1870s

* 12 miles from Malindi is the town of Gedi. Despite Gedi’s close proximity to Malindi; it was never a focus of any European activity. In fact, Gedi was allegedly an invisible town never mentioned in any manuscripts or writing. Swahili Muslims established a mosque, and homes and ran the town.

Itinerary in Detail

Malindi Day Tour Gedi Ruins Watamu Marine Park Hell’s Kitchen begins and ends in Malindi. The tour begins with a transfer from Mombasa to Gedi Ruins.

Visit Gede Ruins – a 12th-century Swahili village that was mysteriously abandoned some 600 years ago. It is now a National Museum and the ruins are heavily overgrown with beautiful indigenous forest trees, baobabs, and tamarind.

Taking a guided tour through the ruins and the museum will teach you a lot of interesting things about the fascinating culture of the Swahili people and the ancient town they constructed.

Next, we visit Watamu Marine National Park, Watamu – is renowned worldwide for its natural beauty and boasts a rich marine life. Enjoy boat excursions to the nearby coral gardens for snorkeling, swimming, and relaxing. For guests who can’t swim, our glass bottom boats are the perfect opportunity to experience the marine life of the coral reef.

In addition to countless other fish and sea life, you may see, whales, whale sharks, dolphins, manta rays, and endangered sea turtles. From October to March is the best time to see whales and dolphins near the Kenyan coast so this is when we take visitors offshore so they can watch these fascinating animals.

Lunch, we make plans for you to visit Hemingway’s Hotel. Malindi used to be a popular spot for Ernest Hemingway

After Lunch in Watamu, we visit Hell’s Kitchen (mini Grand Canyon in the USA) located about a 1½ hours drive north of Malindi to see the sunset. The local residents know it as Nyari, which is Kigiriama for “natural sacred depression”.

Although Hell’s Kitchen is gazetted, no proper measurements have been made of its depth and expanse. Hell’s Kitchen belongs to the local Giriama community. Hell’s Kitchen is an odd sandstone canyon that might be Kenya’s best-kept secret. It looks surreal and most people tend to confuse it for a different gorge, Hell’s Gate, located in Naivasha.

The mini-canyon is officially known as Hell’s Kitchen. The name comes from the high temperatures for which it is famous. No tours are done during the day as the temperatures reach highs of 50 degrees at some point in the canyon.
