This 3 day Uganda wildlife safari offers travelers the once-in-a-lifetime adventure of trekking chimpanzees in the wild at the Budongo Forest Reserve. Budongo Forest is situated approximately 3 hours’ drive northwest of the capital city Kampala on the way to the prominent Murchison Falls National Park.
The trip begins and ends in Kampala and on day one we drive northwest to Murchison Falls National Park, one of Uganda’s oldest national parks. Murchison is rated as a top safari destination in the country. The afternoon is spent on a nature walk in Budongo Royal Mile – a superb birding spot with over 360 species.
This guided forest walk will enable you to explore even more of the forest reserve and see interesting birds such as the Chocolate-backed kingfisher, the White-thighed Hornbill, and Puvel’s ill adiposis found nowhere else in the East. We spend a night at the Budongo Eco Lodge built within the Budongo forest reserve or in Masindi town.
On day two we set off on a half-day chimpanzee trek in Budongo Forest, home to the largest population of chimpanzees in Uganda. East Africa’s biggest Mahogany forest, Budongo is also home to eight other primate species, in addition to the estimated 600 to 700 chimpanzees.
Most of the chimpanzee tracking takes place at Kaniyo Pabidi which is located south of the Murchison Falls National Park. The Chimpanzee trekking lasts for an average of 3 hours. After locating the chimp community, visitors are only allowed one hour with them.
In addition to the chimpanzees and other primate species that are habituated in the Budongo forest reserve include the black and white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, Olive baboons, Grey-cheeked Mangabeys, and blue monkeys.
In the afternoon we take a boat cruise in Murchison National Park, looking out for wildlife and birds. Sightings in Murchison include four of the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard), giraffes, antelopes, and plenty of hippos and Nile crocodiles.
On day three, we make our way back to Kampala where our 3 Days 2 Nights Budongo Forest Reserve Chimpanzee Safari of a lifetime comes to a close in the early evening.
