Blue Posts Hotel Museum
Kenya’s only hotel between two falls, Blue Posts Hotel, now has a museum, adding to the animal park to form a study center for kids wishing to learn more about various animals and about Kenya without having to travel far.
Starting less than a year ago, the museum mostly showcases animal life, with exhibits such as skulls of various animals, including the hippo, zebra, and buffalo, and a collection of droppings from animals such as the crocodile, which resembles sausages, leopard, hippos, and tortoises.
Blue Posts Hotel Museum also has an aquarium with goldfish and various marine animals, including a lobster, the only creature with blue blood; crabs; yellow box fish; porcupine fish; swordfish; Pinkhandle barracuda-a type of fish that feeds on medium fish- and squid; the skull of a shark, as well as coral reefs, shells, and various types of rocks.
Blue Posts Hotel’s restaurant and coffee bar are set overlooking the Chania falls, and the view, the beautiful flowers, and trees give one a feeling of refreshing tranquility. There are also eggs from various animals, including crocodiles and ostriches. An ostrich’s egg is equivalent to 24 chicken eggs, and a person of average weight can actually step on it without breaking it. The only animal known to break an ostrich’s egg is the Egyptian Vulture, which takes the egg up a high place and drops it until it breaks then it feeds on the yolk.
Also on exhibit at the Blue Posts Hotel Museum are East African currencies, both coins and notes that are no longer in use; as well as a collection of various African calabashes. The animal park started about three years ago and houses some of the rarest animals, including a porcupine, the largest rodent in Africa. The rodent has spikes, wags its tail to produce a rattling sound, and is rarely seen during the day because it is nocturnal.
The park also has Nile crocodiles, 4 adults, and over ten young ones, as well as terrapins and tortoises. The park has three tortoise species: leopard tortoises, pancake tortoises, and bell-hinged-back tortoises. The pancake tortoise is flat-shelled, resembling a pancake, and smaller than the other two, while the leopard tortoise is the largest of the three species. Other animals at the park include the pythons, monkeys, pigeons, guinea fowls, turkeys, bush babies, and rabbits.
