Helicopter Scenic Flight 2 Hours Mount Kenya Itinerary

0700 Hours- 0715 Hours: Arrival at Nanyuki Airfield – Guests arrive at Nanyuki Airfield (or at a designated Laikipia lodge) for a safety briefing, an introduction to the pilot, and check-in.

0730 Hours: Departure & Ascent – Take off just before sunrise, flying towards the peak of Mt. Kenya. Experience the rapid change in scenery from savanna to montane forest, bamboo, and Afro-alpine vegetation.

0800 Hours – 0830 Hours: Aerial Tour of Peaks & Glaciers – Fly around the summit peaks of Batian, Nelion, and Point Lenana. View the Lewis and Tyndall Glaciers and the tarns (lakes) surrounding the peaks.

0830 Hours – 0900 Hours: Mountain Landing & Picnic Breakfast – Land at a suitable location such as Lake Michelson, Lake Ellis, or Lake Alice for a picnic breakfast, surrounded by giant groundsels, lobelias, and everlasting flowers.

0900 Hours – 0930 Hours: Exploration & Scenic Return – Enjoy a short, guided walk or trout fishing at the lake. Depart for the return journey, offering a different, lower-level perspective of the foothills and valleys.

0930 Hours – 1000 Hours: Arrival back at Nanyuki – The flight concludes with a safe landing at Nanyuki Airfield.

Helicopter Scenic Flight 2 Hours Mount Kenya: This is a 2-hour helicopter flight that departs from Nanyuki Airfield in the Mount Kenya region. (Guests can be picked from hotels around Nanyuki and Laikipia).

The flight begins just before sunrise, and you fly around the peaks of Mt Kenya, which are Batian at 5,199 meters (17,057 feet), Nelion at 5,188 meters (17,021 feet), and Point Lenana at 4,985metres (16,355 feet).

The vast and desolate nature of Mount Kenya, with its towering summit, sheer cliffs, and glaciers, becomes apparent as we fly above the peaks of Batian and Nelion. The flight offers great views of the many tarns and rivers on the mountain’s upper slopes.

We then touch down for a picnic breakfast at Lake Michelson, an alpine lake. Here you will enjoy beautiful views and unique mountain flora, including everlasting flowers, giant groundsel, lobelia & wild herbs, which are typical of this afro-alpine zone.

An extraordinary landscape lies to the west and northern foothills of Mount Kenya. The Mountain has a great diversity of geographical features, vegetation zones, and climate bands – these become apparent as we descend 3,000 meters from the peaks to the foothills in just 35 km.

There is no better way to appreciate this contrast than by helicopter. From heathland, mountain bamboo, luxuriant evergreen forest, and finally the stunning savannah plains of Northern Kenya – the epitome of what Africa is all about!
