The park is also home to the other Big Five animals of Africa, namely rhino, buffalo, lion, and leopard. Other large animals that are regularly spotted include zebras, waterbuck, eland, bushbuck, and the rare Bongo Antelope. Aberdare National Park covers an area of 767 square km and is located in the Central Highlands of Kenya west of mountain Kenya and about 180 km from Nairobi.
Enjoy the majestic views of the mountain ranges on your Aberdare fishing day trip. View the moss-draped trees of Aberdare forest on your amazing fishing day trip. Go fly fishing on some moorland rivers to catch and release rainbow trout fish on a 1-day fishing trip out of Nairobi.
The rivers are an ideal habitat for Ova, Brown, and Rainbow trout, providing a fantastic opportunity to fish in crystal clear mountain tributaries running through pristine forests. The trout found in these streams are not indigenous to Kenya, and their origins trace back to Lock Leven in Scotland, where they were first imported into Kenya in 1905.
The Aberdare is the main water tower of Kenya. Two of the main rivers of Kenya start from the Aberdare, namely the Athi and Tana Rivers. The Aberdare mountains have streams on the moorland with clear cool waters where trout is plentiful. The Aberdare ranges offer some of the most dramatic waterfalls. The highest waterfall in Kenya is the Karuru Falls which is found in Aberdare National Park.
Other falls include Gura, Chania, and Thompson Falls. The moorland rivers in Aberdare National Park form a great opportunity for fly-fishing for trout.
The moorland rivers were stocked with trout in the 1940s by the British settlers and the populations of brown trout have thrived since. Stocks are however low and a catch of 3 -5 fish is considered good.
