1 Day Fishing Tour Aberdare National Park is a fly-fishing trip in the rivers of Aberdare National Park located on the moorland. Aberdare National Park covers an area of 767 square km and is located in the Central Highlands of Kenya west of mountain Kenya and about 180 km from Nairobi.
Only fly fishing is allowed in Kenyan parks and you will only have your fishing rod and lures. The Aberdare National Park was created in 1950 to protect the forested slopes and moors of the Aberdare Mountains. Animals easily observed in the Aberdare National Park include the lion, leopard, baboon, black and white Colobus, and sykes monkey.
Rarer sightings include those of the Golden Cat and the Bongo – an elusive forest antelope that lives in the bamboo forest. The park has main 3 rivers for fishing that also create magnificent waterfalls. These are Karura falls, Chania falls and Gura falls.
The rivers are an ideal habitat for Ova, Brown, and Rainbow trout, providing a fantastic opportunity to fish in crystal clear mountain tributaries running through pristine forests. The trout found in these streams are not indigenous to Kenya and trace their origins back to Lock Leven in Scotland, from where they were first imported into Kenya in 1905.
Today the waters of the Aberdares, Mt Kenya, and Cherangani Hills are restocked with fingerlings. The best fishing areas are generally found above the 2,000m level. It generally goes that the higher the altitude the smaller the fish. The beautiful mountain scenery, rivers, and picturesque waterfalls make the park a wonderful tourist destination.
So, come and enjoy one of the best fishing and walking experiences that Aberdare has to offer.
Requirement: You need to bring along the basic fly fishing equipment which includes: A fly rod, a fly reel, a few flies, and a Fly fishing line, which consists of backing, a fly line, a leader, and a tippet.

1 Day Fishing Tour Aberdare National Park Itinerary
0500 Hours: Our Aberdare fishing day tour departs from Nairobi for Aberdare National Park. The drive takes us through the towns of Njabini and Ndunyu Njeru towns in Nyandarua County to the foot of the Aberdare mountain ranges.
With altitudes ranging from 7,000 feet to 14,000 feet above sea level, the Aberdare National Park is located 260 km (162 miles) from Nairobi.
We arrive at the Matubio gate on the south-eastern boundary of the Aberdare National Park. This is the highest Gate which is closest to the moorland where you have the best trout fishing experience.
Trout were introduced into Kenya before the First World War but it was not until the 1930’s that extensive stocking got underway. Kenyan trout exhibit a very rapid growth rate and rainbows weighing up to 10 lbs. have been caught.
The best fishing areas are generally found above the 2,000 meters level where the sparkling rivers drop down through mountain forests and open glades. You will also generally find that the higher the altitude, the smaller the fish.
0800 Hours: Arrive at Mutubio gate at 12,000 feet and pay the entrance fees. Proceed to the moorland where most of the trout fishing in Aberdare national park is done on the icy cold rivers guru, Karura and Chania. The best location is the Chania river just below a magnificent high waterfall. Only fly fishing is allowed in Kenyan parks and you will only have your fishing rod and lures.
You need to come with wet gear to be able to withstand the waterfall splash which is very cold at the base of the fall.
1000 Hours: We proceed to the 3 other fishing rivers each with very unique features including more waterfalls, cave fishing, and see the highest waterfall in the park, the Karura waterfall. You can also take time to admire Lesatima and Kinangop peaks or walk through the moorland and visit the magnificent waterfalls.
1300 Hours: Enjoy a picnic lunch at the fishing site as you view the moorland and other animals.
1400 Hours: Continue exploring the other fishing spots in the park with varied success depending on the areas. You will also get to see lots of wildlife including elephants, buffalos, duikers, and waterbucks.
1600 Hours: Exit the park with an en-route game drive.
1900 Hours: Arrive in Nairobi after a fruitful fishing trip in Aberdare national park.
