1 Day Fly Fishing Mount Kenya National Park is one of the unique expeditions to look out for. Mt Kenya is a spectacular location to fish for both Rainbow and Brown Trout. Several streams have both Rainbow and Brown trout. The Lakes are mostly stocked with Rainbow trout that are known to grow to record sizes.
Our Mt Kenya National Park 1-Day Fly Fishing is an expertly guided fishing excursion for our guests that take us high on Mount Kenya, the second-highest mountain in Africa. We use a helicopter or 4-wheel-drive vehicles to explore those crystalline streams in search of Mount Kenya’s hearty rainbow and brown trout, some of which reach 12 pounds.
Mount Kenya boasts over 30 crater lakes and tarns. These lakes may be accessed part by road and part by trekking. Access by helicopter may also be arranged. The most common ones are:
* Lake Alice – 3550 Metres above sea level
* Lake Ellis – 3,470 Metres above sea level
* Rutundu Lake – 3100 Metres above sea level
* Lake Michaelson – 3950 Metres above sea level
Our Fly fishing trip is done near Rutundu Log Cabins on Lake Rutundu and Lake Alice which are well-stocked with rainbow trout. The average catch is 2-3lbs, with larger fish reaching up to 6lbs. Due to the seclusion of these lakes from the main fishing traffic, the fish in these two lakes tend to be quite large.
A rowing boat is provided on Lake Rutundu and there are three casting platforms. Next to Lake Rutundu is the Kizito/Kathita river gorge, a crystal clear river with small trout to catch.
Note: Previous fishing experience is not essential and our team is all experienced fishing guides. Guests who are Kenyan residents need to bring their own fishing equipment. It’s also fun to drive to get to these out-of-the-way lakes /tarns on Mt Kenya slopes.
Fishing on Mt Kenya however requires you to go for more than a day due to the distances and hiking involved to get to the best fishing spots on Mt Kenya. You can stay at a hotel near Mt Kenya or If you start very early from Nairobi, you can make a day trip and do trout fishing on Lake Rutundu and a few rivers on the slopes.
1 Day Fly Fishing Mount Kenya National Park Itinerary
0400 Hours: Depart Nairobi for Mt Kenya 1 day fishing trip by road in a 4×4 vehicle and drive North A2 Isiolo road
0600 Hours: Pass through Nyeri town and drive towards Nanyuki.
0800 Hours: Pass through Rutundu gate and start driving up the mountain. Most of the journey is on a dirt road up the mountain, so expect some bumps along the way, but the drive up is stunning, the views of mount Kenya on a clear day are incredible. The road ends at the Kizito Gorge where
1000 Hours: Arrive at the car park at Rutundu followed by a hike to Lake Rutundu to start your fishing. The lake has some top-notch fishing, with the catch of the day being Rainbow Trout. The rainbow trout in the lakes range from 2-6 lbs. Fishing equipment may be provided, but serious fishing enthusiasts prefer to bring their own equipment.
The bird life on the mountain is delightful, with frequent sightings of the scarlet-tufted malachite sunbirds and alpine chats often at breakfast time.
1300 Hours: Packed lunch by the edge of Lake Rutundu
1400 Hours: Continue fishing in the lake
1500 Hours: start to drive back and exit the park at 1700 Hours for Nairobi
1800 Hours: Drop off at your Nairobi hotel.
