Kigali is Rwanda’s capital city and was named in 1907 by Dr. Richard Kandt, the first colonial resident governor of Rwanda. The city is built on several hills and valleys, gaining the title – Hilly City or “the land of a thousand hills.

Kigali comprises 3 major districts, including Nyarugenge, Kicukiro, and Gasabo. The total population is about 1 million, of which 70% live in rural areas, with close to 50% of the population being women and 60% being young.

The trip begins after breakfast from your hotel with a visit to Juru Park for a fantastic view of the city, followed by a visit to the Presidential Palace Museum, Genocide Memorial Centre, Kimoronko Giant Market, and a visit to the Caplaki Kigali Artist Village.

Other interesting sites you could add to the itinerary include a walking tour of Nyamirambo, Nyamata Church, the Ethnographic Museum, Green Park, and shopping malls, among others.

Later in the evening, head to the Crystal View Cocktail Lounge on the eighth floor of the Top Tower Hotel, which offers a stunning 360° panoramic view of Kigali’s skyline.

Nyamata Church Genocide Site: This is another site in Kigali where the genocide took place, over 5000 people in the area around this church in 1994

Genocide Memorial Centre:  Regarded as one of the best museums in Africa. Visit the Gisozi Genocide site to learn of the dark times of the 100 days of genocide in the entire country in 1994

Kandt Museum and Natural History Museum: The Kandt Museum is found at the base of Mount Jali and Mount Kigali. It is in the same place that the German explorer Dr. Kadnt resided

Presidential Palace Museum: This palace was the former residence of President Habyarimana, who died in 1994 in a plane crash at the presidential compound. It is his death that launched a dark era of genocide

Art Museum: Visit Inema Arts Center for contemporary African art, paintings, sculptures, jewelry, African fabrics, and leatherworks. At the museum, visitors will be treated to some cool performances by the young kids at the art museum

Walking Tour of Nyamirambo: It’s filled with character and the streets are almost always bustling with people – unlike the rest of the city’s sleepy streets. It’s where many of Kigali’s Muslims live, and it also houses lots of lively bars that seem to be open and busy at any time of the day

Souvenir Shopping: Caplaki Handicrafts Cooperation, a selection of market stalls where you can shop for woodcarvings, drums, baskets, and ceramics. Kimironko market also sells arts and crafts

A visit to the Azizi Life Boutique located at the Heaven Restaurant offers something really nice, items that are a bit more upscale, unique, and crafted by talented local artisans.
