Our 2-Day Lake Naivasha Safari explores Hells Gate National Park, Lake Naivasha, and Crescent Island Game Sanctuary. This 2-Day safari starts with collection from your hotel/ residence in Nairobi or the airport in the capital of Kenya, Nairobi.

On day one we travel to Lake Naivasha, – a freshwater lake, lying 100 km northwest of Nairobi at 1880 m above sea level, and visit the nearby Hells Gate National Park. This park is 90 km or 55 miles northwest of the capital of Nairobi and just south of Lake Naivasha.

This game park has over 100 species of birds including vultures, Verreaux’s Eagles, augur buzzards, and swifts. African buffalo, zebra, eland, hartebeest, Thomson’s gazelle, and baboons are also common. The Hells gate is also home to klipspringer antelope and Chanler’s mountain reedbuck.

One of the unique features of this game park is that it can be explored on foot or by bicycle, due to the absence of large predators. Bikes can be hired at extra cost to cycle through the game park. We recommend hiking and cycling in the wildlife park, as this is a great way to experience the bush, as well as being a rare opportunity in Kenyan national parks.

Later we drive to our accommodation near Hellsgate Park in Naivasha for lunch and an afternoon of relaxation.

On day two we start the day with a relaxing boat ride on Lake Naivasha, spotting the beautiful water birds and the many hippos that live in and around the water. Lake Naivasha is known as an IBA (Important Bird Area). You will find more than 300 different bird species including the African fish eagle which is present in high numbers around the lake.

From the boat and at the shores of the lake, you will be able to spot other wildlife as well. Giraffes, many antelopes, wildebeests, and a lot of zebras are wandering around. Not to forget the monkeys, amongst them also the beautiful black-and-white colobus monkey.

Later we visit Crescent Island Game Park a peninsular and accessible by boat from the East or West as well as by road for a guided walk amongst animals. Crescent Island has an abundance of animals including Giraffe, Hippopotamus, Buffalo, Waterbuck, Wildebeest, Zebra, Impala, Python, Mongoose, Jackal, etc. After lunch drives back to Nairobi arriving late afternoon.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi to Hells Gate National Park – Kenya

Travel from Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, to Lake Naivasha, visiting the nearby Hells Gate National Park. Arrive at Hell’s Gate National Park. Once at the Park, you have the option of a game drive in a Safari vehicle or take bikes into the Park. Cycling in the Park is a great adventure as you get to ride the bikes for 7 Kilometers before resting at a ranger’s post.

After a brief stop at the ranger’s post, you leave the bike and start a walking safari. Enjoy the spectacular views of the gorge. The walking trip or safari takes 3 hours. The park provides a variety of wildlife, unusual flora, and many species of birds and is one of the only two Kenyan Parks where climbing, walking and biking are allowed.

Animals seen here include Bushbucks, Dikdiks, Gazelles, Gnus, Hartebeests, Impalas, Klipspringers, Buffaloes, Hyraxes, Zebras, Hyenas, Jackals, Mongooses, Baboons, Monkeys and Porcupines amongst others.

Day 2: Lake Naivasha Boat Ride & Crescent Island Wildlife Sanctuary

Start the day with a relaxing boat ride on Lake Naivasha, spotting birds and keeping an eye out for wildlife along the shores of the lake. Lake Naivasha is home to a multitude of birds, among them the African Fish Eagle, vultures, Verreaux’s Eagles, augur buzzard and swifts.

Next, we visit Crescent Island Game Sanctuary – a peninsula or island on the eastern side of Lake Naivasha. A short boat trip from the mainland out into Lake Naivasha gives you access to the unique Crescent Island Wildlife Sanctuary. There is also the possibility to access it by road passing through the “Horse Riding Complex.”

A wide variety of wildlife, bird life, and flora lives quite freely out there, and as there are no predators to be found, quite happily as well. There is a lot of easy-to-see game e.g. giraffes, waterbucks, elands, wildebeests, zebras, and impalas. It is also a heaven for birds with + 200 species recorded. The lake has a lot of hippos, which you can easily spot on the island. After lunch, we drive back to Nairobi arriving late afternoon.
