Source of the Nile

This 2-day Uganda tour is all about enjoying the great outdoors and the exciting adventure activities. The trip includes a visit to Ssezibwa Falls – a heritage site affiliated with the Buganda kingdom and a great place for guided walks and bird watching.

Next, we travel to Mabira Central Forest Reserve, for a guided walk. Mabira Forest is home to over 300 different tree species, swamps, waterfalls, primate species such as mangabey monkeys, baboons, and Red-tailed monkeys. The forest has several mammal species such as Bush pigs, Bushbucks, Duikers, Bushbaby, and in rare cases Leopards.

There are over 315 bird species including rare species like Illadopsises, Nahan’s francolin, papyrus Gonolek, Purple-throated cuckoo shrikes among others, over 219 species of Butterflies, several moth species, reptile pieces including snakes, lizards among others.

After lunch in Jinja town, we take a boat ride to the source of the Nile with shaded fishing boats with outboard engines. On the boat ride, you will see numerous water birds like Cormorants, Pelicans, Storks, and Kingfishers among others. Animals include the Nile monitors, vervet monkeys, etc. 

On day two, we drive to Sipi Falls, a series of three tall waterfalls all plunging along the lower slopes of Mt Elgon. The hiking trails lead you through local communities to roaring waterfalls, lush farms and forests, and magnificent views of the Karamoja plains.

Each waterfall offers an experience different from another, from the plunge, beautiful views, caves, to rainbows. The entire hike takes about 4 hours.

You will visit the first waterfall from the top and descending down to the second and finally to the third at the end of the trail which is the biggest and main one. It is has a large whirlpool which you can dive in for a swim in the cold water.

At the end of the trek, you will have lunch in Sipi and later transfer to Kampala/ Entebbe arriving in the evening.

2 Day Sezibwa Mabira River Nile Source Sipi Falls Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Jinja/ Kampala or Entebbe – Drive to Sezibwa Falls, Mabira Rainforest & Source of the Nile in Jinja

0600 Hours: We enjoy breakfast at our hotel in Kampala/ Entebbe then depart by road at 0700 driving eastwards on the Kampala – Jinja highway.  Our first stop on the tour will be at Sezibwa Falls – a Buganda Cultural Heritage Site that is found in Mukono District. It is situated only 20 miles on the Kampala – Jinja Highway

Once at the site our local guide takes us on a 1-hour hike which includes a visit to the crystal-clear waterfalls. The grounds are very serene and cool with lots of birds, monkeys, and butterflies. A visit to a shrine is also included which has traditional worship items which were used by Buganda. The local guide will give us the history of the Sezibwa.

After the tour of Sezibwa, we depart for a short 20 minutes drive to the Mabira rainforest. Here we enjoy a 2-hour forest trek. Mabira is the largest forest in central Uganda spanning 306 square kilometers.

It supports plenty of life including 312 species of trees and shrubs, of some, be unique to the forest.

There are over 316 species of birds, 219 moths, and 35 species of small animals such as Duikers, Bushbuck, Squirrels, Red-tailed Monkeys, and Grey-cheeked Mangabeys.

After visiting Mabira we drive to Jinja town for lunch. Thereafter transfer to the Nile for a one-hour boat ride to the Source of the Nile and Lake Victoria. We explore the beautiful sights across the lake and the adjacent peninsula and also see plenty of water birds such as Herons, Pelicans, Kingfishers, Egrets, and more.

Later we drive to Mbale town, arriving in the evening. Check-in at your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Mbale Town – Drive to Sipi Falls – Hike – Drive to Kampala

0800 Hours: After breakfast, we drive for an hour to Sipi Falls and with a local guide, start the hike to the three waterfalls. You follow a trail 7 to 8 km long that goes through local communities and their farms with tea and banana plantations.

After visiting each waterfall you are treated to breathtaking landscape scenery, from the green slopes of Mountain Elgon to the distant flat plains of Karamoja in the distance. Each waterfall offers an experience different from another, from the plunge, beautiful views, caves, to rainbows. The entire hike takes 3 to 4 hours.

You will visit the first waterfall from the top and descending to the second and finally to the third at the end of the trail which is the biggest and main one. It is has a large whirlpool which you can dive in for a swim in the cold water.

At the end of the trek, you will have lunch in Sipi and later travel back to Kampala arriving in the evening.
