Budongo Central Forest Reserve

This short 2 day Uganda safari begins from Kampala and takes you for a chimpanzee trekking safari in Budongo Forest, home to the largest population of chimpanzees in Uganda.

Budongo Forest is situated approximately 3 hours drive northwest of the capital city Kampala on the way to the prominent Murchison Falls National Park.  East Africa’s biggest Mahogany forest, Budongo is also home to eight other primate species, in addition to the estimated 600 to 700 chimpanzees.

This sizeable forest is known for its incredible biodiversity, including 24 species of animals, over 360 bird species, 290 butterfly species, 130 species of moths, 465 tree species, and numerous other plants and creatures.

On the first day of your 2 days Chimpanzee Safari to Budongo Forest, you will transfer from Kampala to Budongo Forest Reserve, a journey that takes  5 to 6 hours. The afternoon is spent on a forest walk where you are likely to see a high density of birds, including the Chocolate-backed Kingfisher and Paradise Flycatcher.

The forest contains the Royal Mile, named for its popularity as a traditional stopover for Uganda’s royalty. The Royal Mile is a superb birding spot, with many West and Central African species in addition to the local East African species.

On day two, we enjoy a guided primate walk in the lush expanses of the tropical forest, in search of the habituated chimpanzee family. Your guide will explain to you more about the animals and plants species that you encounter on your way.

Also look out for other primates like the black and white colobus, red tail monkeys, blue monkeys, and olive baboons, different types of birds, tracks of mammals, and much more. Chimp tracking can be experienced daily with two viewing times per day.

The hike takes about 2 to 4 hours, depending on the movement of the chimpanzees. Once the chimps are found you will stay for one hour with these amazing creatures to watch them eating, resting, and playing.

The area is relatively flat and thus easy to trek. You’ll team up with field assistants at the Budongo Conservation Field Station to observe chimps and other primates as they forage for food in the morning and late afternoon.

Day 2: Budongo Forest Reserve – Chimpanzee Tracking

0700 Hours: Breakfast at the lodge then followed by Chimpanzee tracking for 3 to 4 hours in a small-group experience. The Chimp trek sets out from the visitor’s information centre at Budongo Eco Lodge.

Sometimes the Chimpanzee can be so near that they can be heard from the Budongo Ecolodge and the trek to find them will take a few minutes. You spend only one hour with the Chimpanzee and no more than 8 persons can track.

However, during certain times of the year when food is not readily available, the chimpanzees travel away from this territory, wandering deeper into the forest thus tracking them becomes more difficult.

Each day, chimpanzees like gorillas move to new locations for the night building fresh nests for the day. Budongo Forest is a project of both the Jane Goodall Institute and Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Enjoy your time with the chimpanzees.
