Kibale National Park

This 2-day safari takes you to the best place for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda – Kibale National Park located in western Uganda. Kibale National Park (formerly Kibale Forest National Park) is located some 348km (5 hours drive) from Kampala and about 26km southeast of the beautiful Fort Portal town – one of Uganda’s most lovely places to explore.

The Park is one of the best safari destinations in Africa for chimpanzee trekking holidays and has the highest number and diversity of primates in East Africa. There are 13 species of primates including chimpanzees living within its 795 km2 land cover with the most beautiful and most diversified tracts of tropical forest in the whole of Uganda.

In addition to Chimpanzees, Kibale is home to the uncommon L’Hoest’s monkeys, East Africa’s biggest population of the endangered red colobus monkeys, the black & white colobus, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, olive baboons, grey-cheeked mangabeys, bushbabies as well as potto among many others.

Our 2 Day Uganda Chimpanzee Trekking Safari departs from Kampala, the capital of Uganda. Leaving Kampala we drive through the dense jungles and papyrus wetlands of the Nile Delta.  We pause for lunch en route to the Kibale National Park, near the towering Ruwenzori Mountains, known as the Mountains of the Moon.

In the afternoon we set off on a scenic walk in the crater lakes area of the national park.  Walking in this tranquil area provides beautiful views of the forests, plantations, and mountains, and perhaps even sightings of monkeys and other creatures. We walk to a local village where we are treated to a unique cultural experience in the evening.

Day two starts early, with breakfast and then chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park, home to an impressive 500 chimpanzees. After the briefing, we make our way into the forest on foot to track down the chimpanzees of Kibale Forest.

The guide can tell you all about the chimpanzees and other inhabitants of Kibale as we walk. In addition to chimpanzees, we might spot a variety of primates, including grey-cheeked mangabeys, colobus monkeys, and red-tailed monkeys, along with birds, insects, and butterflies.

In Kibale, the chances of encountering chimpanzees are exceptionally high. We spend an hour watching our closest relatives, sharing about 98% of our DNA makeup. Watching the chimpanzees swing in the trees and interact on the ground is a special experience. It is remarkable to see how the behavior of these social apes resembles that of our own!

Returning from our chimpanzee encounter in the forest, we have lunch and then we set off for the drive back to Kampala. Travel Time: 5 Hours. Expect to arrive at 1900 Hours.
