Starting and ending in Arusha or Moshi, Tanzania, this affordable 2 Days 1 Night Ngorongoro Crater Road Safari is ideal for travelers with a limited time and budget in East Africa!
The Ngorongoro Crater is an extinct volcanic caldera in the Eastern Great Rift Valley, northern Tanzania, and lies 75 miles (120 km) west of the town of Arusha and the drive takes around 4 hours to the Crater.
This short overnight wildlife holiday begins with a drive to the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater, hosting Africa’s Big Five and an abundance of other wildlife. Ngorongoro, part of the Serengeti ecosystem, is a massive caldera spanning an impressive 18 km in diameter with walls as high as 600m.
You travel in a custom-designed 4×4 safari vehicle with an open roof for game viewing and a maximum of 6 travelers, all with window seats.
Once on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, we stop to enjoy the crater views and then continue on our way to your lodge/ camp to arrive in time for lunch. After lunch, the afternoon is at leisure. You can choose to enjoy one of the many activities available. Karatu Town tour – this tour will include a visit to the local market and a nearby school.
Cultural experiences – this will give an opportunity to understand the way of life as experienced by the local tribes for example the Iraqw as well as the neighboring tribes like the Maasai and the Bushmen.
Nature walks hiking and jogging – this activity could be done in the surrounding forest area as well as in the nearby villages and into the town of Karatu.
The following day after breakfast we descend the steep crater walls to explore this wilderness teeming with wildlife. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the densest mammalian population in Africa, with around 25,000 large animals.
The diverse habitats found on the fertile crater floor support a variety of wildlife, including Lion, Leopard, Elephants, Monkeys, Hyena, Jackal and herds of Zebra, Wildebeest, Buffalo, and other Antelope species.
Other wildlife in the Ngorongoro include Serval Cat, Cheetah, Jackal, Grant’s, and Thompson’s Gazelles along with approximately 400 species of bird. Animals are free to leave or enter the crater but most of them stay because of the plentiful water and food available on the crater floor throughout the year.
We stop for lunch at a picnic site on the floor of the crater and later continue with a game drive. After our thorough exploration of Ngorongoro, we ascend the crater walls and make our way back to Arusha or Moshi, where our memorable wildlife safari ends.
