Hadzabe Tribe Lake Eyasi Tanzania

Our 3-Day Tanzania Fly-in Cultural Safari is a people-to-people tour where we will introduce you to the people, culture, customs, traditions, and lifestyles of the Hadzabe people of northern Tanzania. They are considered one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa with approximately 1,300 tribe members.

Their native homeland includes the Eyasi Valley (Yaeda Valley) southwest of the Ngorongoro Crater. You will be accompanied by an expert guide who has a long-standing relationship with the group. This 3-day trip offers a unique chance to learn and witness first-hand how the Hadza live off the land.

As a hunter-gatherer society, the Hadzabe have no domesticated livestock, nor do they grow or store their own food. The Hadza survive by hunting their food with hand-made bows and arrows and foraging for edible plants.  The Hadza diet is primarily plant-based but also consists of meat, fat, and honey. They create temporary shelters of dried grass and branches, and they own few possessions.

Their bush skills are something that has been long forgotten across much of Africa, and time spent with the Hadzabe (Hadza) offers a very raw and authentic cultural experience – something you will never forget. Your time spent with the Hadzabe is structured but is not a trip staged for tourists.

This is very much part of the appeal but does mean that if you venture out with the Hadza men on a hunt, you will need to be able to keep up. It is also possible to spend time with the women of the tribe and learn about the gatherer side of their traditions and skills, which is equally insightful and fascinating.

The men run through the bush and if they find an animal to hunt, they will do so (and subsequently prepare and cook it on fire). They do not hold back from doing this, even when tourists accompany them, as it is their way of life. Visitors who are not interested in the hunting aspect of this Adventure are welcome to choose this option instead.

Your guide will brief you fully on the evening of Day 1 to make sure everyone knows what to expect. The Hadzabe speak a unique language known as Hadzane, which incorporates clicking and popping sounds as well as more familiar sounds.

According to their own history, which they preserved through oral tradition, the Hadza have lived in their current environment bordering the Serengeti plains since their first days as a unique group.

This is relatively close to the spot where Homo habilis, one of the earliest hominids, lived 1.9 million years ago. Genetically, the Hadzabe shows one of the oldest lineages of contemporary humans. Contemporary settlements and farming practices currently threaten the lifestyle of the Hadza.

They have lost between 75 percent and 90 percent of their land over the past 50 years.

You will be picked up from Manyara Airstrip (or if already in Karatu town) by your guide and 4×4 vehicle and driven through the Ngorongoro highlands and down into the Lake Eyasi basin, characterized by open grasslands, rocky ridges, and hundreds of baobab trees.

The drive takes approximately 4 hours from Karatu, and you will arrive in the late afternoon at your fly camp in the Yaeda Valley. Spend the evening learning more about the days to come from your guide, gaining an understanding of the Hadzabe people, their traditions and skills, and also the wider area.

Day 2: Full Day Spent with Hadzabe Tribe

Enjoy an early start for breakfast before departing with a Hadza hunter and your guide. Hunting excursions are often a mix of honey gathering and eating berries, but also opportunistic if a monkey or mammal is seen. The hunting is typically a mix of walking and occasional running if the hunter sees something exciting.

Return to your fly camp for lunch and a siesta and, in the afternoon, walk for around an hour to a nearby Hadza village where your guide will introduce you. Set off on a walk with the women to gather berries, and baobab fruit when they are in season and dig for tubers. Men will often join the walk to harvest honey from hives in the trees.

Return to your fly camp for sundowners and to enjoy the views over the valley while recounting tales of the day’s adventures.
