Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

This is a short 3-day Uganda safari from Kampala or Entebbe to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary on Lake Victoria in  Uganda. Located 23 kilometers offshore from Entebbe, Ngamba Island offers a unique opportunity for close viewing of chimpanzees in their natural environment.

Surrounded by the peaceful waters of Lake Victoria, Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is home to 50 orphaned chimpanzees rescued from the illegal pet and bushmeat trade across East Africa. Despite their initial trauma, chimps living at Ngamba have a safe and semi-natural environment in which to recover and eventually thrive over their long lives of up to 60 years.

The Island consists of approximately 100 acres, of which 95 acres are forested and separated from the human camp by an electric fence, and is home to chimpanzees and other wildlife species including fruit bats, spiders, fish eagles, otters, and monitor lizards.

Day one begins with a transfer from Kampala or Entebbe (En route visit Entebbe Botanical Gardens) to the waterfront club jetty located on Lake Victoria and sail some 23 km from Entebbe town by boat to Ngamba Islands. Boat transfer by Speedboat – approximately 50 minutes, weather dependant. Boat transfer by Traditional boat – approximately 90 minutes, weather dependant.

Upon arrival at the island, home to 45 chimpanzees you will have an introductory talk about the conservation and care of the chimps and enjoy watching them being fed. You will be allowed about an hour with the chimpanzees and later after lunch,  participate in bird watching, spot-necked otter counting, and other wildlife.

Later participate in the behind-the-scenes activities; observing chimps as they return, feed, and prepare their nests. Your accommodation will be at the Ngamba Island Camp. Each tent accommodates two persons (twin beds) in comfort, with duvets and all linen supplied en suite bathroom facilities and solar lighting.

On day two, take part in the Chimp environmental enrichment program which will involve you to challenge the chimps’ critical thinking abilities to help them stay healthy, physically and mentally.  Later proceed, and start the fishing activity which will include a visit to neighboring islands/ hiking on Koome Island where you will also be treated to sights of different plants, tree species, and over 120 bird species.

As the day ends join us for an exclusive sunset cruise as you enjoy the unique view of fishermen casting their nets, fishing villages as they wind down the day, and of course the golden circular site of nature’s eye going to sleep. As you sip away on cold drinks in a romantic bliss

On day three, we enjoy an early breakfast then transfer by boat to the mainland and return to Kampala.
