Safari Itinerary in Detail
Day 1: Nairobi – Fly to Solio Conservancy
From the moment you land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, your private helicopter will be waiting for you and will take you on a short, scenic flight over the rolling Aberdares and land in front of Solio Lodge where our staff will be waiting for you.
The only lodge in this private conservancy, this exclusive hideaway is the best location to see black and white rhinos in Africa.
Each cottage is exquisitely created with large glass windows and private decks, with an emphasis on space, light and privacy. Warm up by our cosy fireplaces in the bedrooms and enjoy two nights of unforgettable safari.
After a late morning coffee at the lodge, fly up over the majestic 17,000 feet of snow and the glacier-capped peak of Mount Kenya.
You will then descend to around 13,000 feet and land at one of several pristine high-altitude lakes on the Mountain teeming with rainbow trout for a spectacularly exclusive fly fishing experience.
Followed by a champagne breakfast before returning to the lodge late morning to relax for the remainder of the day.

Day 2: Solio Conservancy – Fly to Mt Nyiru between Maralal and Lake Turkana in North Kenya
On the following day, you will depart at first light heading North over the Western highlands of the Laikipia plateau before descending into the Great Rift Valley down the Mukutan Gorge. You will land on the edge of the vast Silali Crater for a light picnic breakfast before continuing North into the otherwise inaccessible Suguta Valley.
A truly wild area which is renowned for its geological significance and host to fantastic rock formations where you will land to explore a remarkable hoodoo valley while keeping an eye out for the Lesser Kudu and Striped Hyena is occasionally seen in this unique environment.
We arrive at Desert Rose lodge in time for lunch.
Desert Rose is a unique eco-friendly lodge, located on the verdant forest slopes of Mt Nyiru which towers majestically above the Elbarta plains, between Maralal and Lake Turkana in North Kenya.
The five houses accommodating up to twelve people are individually designed and are perched high on the edge of Mount Nyiru by the edge of a cool mountain stream around various natural features.
Once the heat of the day is passed we will take off and fly over the dreamlike cedar forest crowning Mount Nyiru before descending to the Southern edge of the Jade Sea. Lake Turkana is the largest permanent desert lake in the world and is often referred to as the Cradle of Mankind.
We will land on the edge of the Nabuyatom Crater to take in one of Africa’s most extraordinary landscapes before continuing South back into the Suguta Valley and over the amazing Flamingo Lake, Lake Logipi.
This alkaline lake regularly hosts upwards of a million Greater and Lesser Flamingoes and presents a remarkable vista when viewed from your helicopter’s open doors. We will land amid Sahar-Esque Sand Dunes for a memorable sundowner before the short flight back to Desert Rose before nightfall.

Day 3: Mt Nyiru – Mathews Range is the heart of Samburu Country
After a well-deserved lie-in and breakfast, depart Desert Rose and head south into the Ndoto Mountains. This mountain range, together with her sister Mathews’s range further to the south, are sky islands surrounded by plains.
A number of the species in these mountain ranges have evolved independently and the diversity of the forest is of great conservation value. The Mathews Range is the heart of Samburu country.
Land for a mid-morning coffee and a short walk in this forest filled with juniper and prehistoric cycads before continuing to our destination Sasaab in time for lunch.
Sasaab is a breathtaking Moroccan-style lodge with panoramic views of the Ewaso Nyiro River where elephants come to bathe. Our nine airy rooms, enormous bathrooms and secluded private plunge pools offer a cooling relief from the African heat.
Relax with a luxurious treatment at Spa-Saab or immerse yourself in the Samburu culture by visiting a local village or market. Much later in the afternoon after a siesta, you have the option to take off for a short scenic flight to spot rare Grevy’s Zebra from the air and land on the sacred Samburu Mountain.
There is also the Ol Donyo Sabachi (Ol Lolokwe), which stands 1,000 metres above the surrounding plains and from which, on a clear evening, we could well get a magnificent view of Mount Kenya 70 miles to the South West.
Return to Sasaab in time for sundowners and take a short walk to Sundowner Rock, for 360° views of the expansive Mathews Range, the perfect spot to end the day and relax with a cold beer or a glass of chilled wine before nightfall.
