Great wildebeest migration

This 5-day Tanzania road safari has been designed specifically to focus on and increase your chance to see the great Serengeti wildebeest migration. You will visit Southern Serengeti (Ndutu), Central Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater.

Beginning and ending in Arusha Tanzania, the tour first heads to the Southeastern plains & Ndutu area of the Serengeti National Park. This area includes short-grass plains that stretch from the western side of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the southeast Serengeti National Park.

The southeastern portion of Serengeti is teeming with wildlife year-round, but the peak in terms of wildlife density is between December and April. Giant herds of wildebeest and zebra are attracted by the seasonal rains pouring down.

In this period the best area to see wildlife is around Lake Ndutu, in the heart of the wildebeest gathering. This is where female wildebeest give birth to countless calves and therefore makes up one of the highlights of the Great Migration.

Day two is spent on a  full day game viewing in Ndutu plains which are populated by huge herds of wildebeest, zebra, and antelope as they settle on the fertile grasslands to calve.

The area is also home to plenty of resident wildlife that doesn’t follow the migration, including giraffe, elephant, hyena, and antelope which tend to concentrate around the waterholes. All six cat species can be found in the area throughout the year; lion, leopard, cheetah, caracal, serval, and African wildcat.

Day three kicks off with a game drive as you travel to Central Serengeti & Seronera Valley lying at the heart of the Serengeti National Park. Known as the Big Cat Capital of Africa, the Seronera is rich in lion, leopard, and cheetah – and people often spot all three in one day of game drives.

April to June is the peak season for game viewing in the Seronera, as this is when the plains are full of migrating wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle as they’re making their way up north.

On Day Four, we venture into the Seronera Valley for more wildlife spotting. The beautiful Seronera Valley area is home to healthy populations of Africa’s Big Five – rhino, lion, buffalo, elephant, and leopard as well as eland, topi, kudu, impala, oribi, waterbuck, and giraffe, serval cat, hyena, and a rich array of other wildlife, along with over 500 bird species!

Then we make our way to the Ngorongoro Crater, leaving the wide-open Serengeti plains after midday.

Day Five, we descend the steep crater walls to explore this diverse wilderness area teeming with Africa’s wildlife. The Ngorongoro Crater hosts the Big Five of Africa, boasting one of the highest concentrations of lions in the world. Almost all of the wild animal species found on the savannahs of East Africa inhabit this compact crater.

The diverse habitats found on the fertile crater floor support a variety of wildlife, including elephants, monkeys, hyenas, jackals, and herds of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, and other antelope species.

The crater wildlife safari experience is followed by lunch and later leave for our return to Arusha where this Serengeti wildebeest migration Safari ends.
