Samburu National Reserve is a stunning, semi-arid region in north-central Kenya renowned for its dramatic landscapes, rich pastoralist culture, and unique wildlife. It encompasses both the iconic Samburu National Reserve and the broader Samburu County, offering an authentic, rugged wilderness experience away from the bustling tourist circuits.

Aberdare National Park is a stunning, high-altitude reserve in Kenya’s central highlands, located about 150 km (93 miles) north of Nairobi. It is renowned for its misty moorlands, dense bamboo forests, deep waterfalls, and diverse wildlife, including elephants, black rhinos, leopards, and the rare mountain bongo.

Amboseli National Park is an iconic 392-square-kilometer reserve in southern Kenya, world-renowned for its majestic herds of large-tusked elephants and breathtaking, uninterrupted views of Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro. Located roughly 240 kilometers southeast of Nairobi, it is one of the premier safari destinations in Africa.

Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve

0730 Hours: Depart Nairobi heading north via the central highlands and the equator crossing
1300 Hours: Arrive in Samburu in time for lunch at your lodge or camp
1530 Hours – 1830  Hours:  Afternoon game drive. Look for the “Samburu Special Five”: Reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and the gerenuk
Transit Time: ~5.5 to 6.5 hours (315 km) on paved and (approaching the park) rough dirt roads

Day 2: Full Day in Samburu

0630  Hours – 0900 Hours: Early morning game drive (best lighting and peak predator activity)
1230 Hours – 1500 Hours: Hot lunch and time to relax at the lodge pool
1530 Hours  – 1830 Hours: Late afternoon game drive along the Ewaso Nyiro River to spot elephants and Nile crocodiles

Day 3: Samburu to Aberdare National Park

0800 Hours:  Depart Samburu and drive south towards the Aberdare mountain ranges
1300 Hours: Arrive at the base hotel (The Ark Lodge or Treetops Lodge) for lunch
1430  Hours: Transfer to the specific tree lodge. The afternoon is spent relaxing and watching the floodlit waterholes from the viewing decks
Transit Time: ~4.5 hours (200 km) via Nyeri/ Nyahururu

Day 4: Aberdare to Amboseli National Park

0800  Hours: Descend from the Aberdares and drive past Nairobi toward the southern border with Tanzania
1300  Hours: Stop for lunch en route or arrive in Amboseli early afternoon
1600  Hours – 1830  Hours – Afternoon game drive against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro
Transit Time: ~7 to 8 hours (400 km). You will bypass Nairobi via the Eastern Bypass to avoid heavy city traffic

Day 5: Full Day in Amboseli

0630  Hours – 0930  Hours: Early morning game drive to catch clear, unobstructed views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s snowy peak before clouds roll in
1230  Hours – 1500  Hours: Lunch and rest at your lodge or camp
1530  Hours – 1830 Hours: Late afternoon game drive through the dusty plains and marshlands to see massive elephant herds

Day 6: Amboseli to Nairobi (Departure)

0630  Hours  – 0830  Hours:  Sunrise game drive for a final chance at spotting predators or birdlife
0830  Hours:  Breakfast at the lodge, followed by check-out.
0930  Hours: Depart Amboseli for Nairobi
1430  Hours: Arrive in Nairobi in time for hotel drop-offs or an evening flight out of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA)

This 6-days/5 nights road safari in Kenya visits Kenya’s prime game-viewing parks of Samburu, Aberdare, and Amboseli, with stays at intimate camps and lodges. 

After meeting your guide in Nairobi, you begin straight away at Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya. Samburu is home to all the big cats; it’s especially good for leopards, and it provides a haven for super-rare wild dogs and large numbers of elephants.

The 450 bird species will delight birders, and it’s also the best destination for wildlife enthusiasts who want to see unusual animals that don’t occur in Kenya’s better-known reserves. Top of the list are the ‘Samburu Big 5’ – Grevy’s zebra; the long-necked gerenuk; the reticulated giraffe; besia oryx; and the Somali ostrich.

Then it is on to the Aberdare National Park in Kenya’s Central Highlands. Aberdare is one of the more scenic and tropical parks, and is home to the Big 5, as well as some rare forest-dwelling game like the shy bongo antelope, which looks a little like a reddish kudu and lives in the bamboo forests.

Other animals include the Colobus monkey, golden cat, giant forest hog, and leopard. The area also has a respectable birding list of over 250 species. Accommodation here is at the Ark Lodge or the Treetops lodge, where you can watch the animals that frequently visit the lively waterhole beside the lodge, from a series of viewing decks and areas at different levels.

Spotting animals at the floodlit saltlick and watering hole into the night, with common visitors including elephants, buffalo, rhinos, and even leopards.

Finally, we visit Amboseli National Park, which not only offers great game viewing but also offers the best views of iconic Mount Kilimanjaro. The world’s tallest free-standing mountain actually rises just across the border in Tanzania.

The swamps in Amboseli support a rich diversity of wildlife, and most of the classic big mammals are there. The species list includes lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, spotted hyena, giraffe, and cheetah, and bird watchers will be happy with a list that tops 300 species.

An optional visit to a Masai village is available, as the Masai also call this home. Here, you learn about their tribal social systems, customs, and the place of the Masai in today’s Africa.

After 2 nights in Amboseli, we drive back through rural Kenya to the capital city, Nairobi. Upon arrival in Nairobi, you can be transferred to the international airport or to your residence.
