You need complete confidence in your ability to trek for many days over difficult terrain. The success rate of the route is between 60% and 70%. From there, your options are 13,200 at Karanga camp, or if your guide deems safe, skip it and go direct to Barafu camp at 15,000′. Your final summit bid will most likely be very early in the morning when you battle the effects of altitude, lack of appetite, and a strenuous 4,000′ climb to the summit of Uhuru Peak. Very worthwhile, and be ready for a long, descent from the summit (10,000′ down at least). There are two possible camps on the descent, which are very busy due to the only decent route (Millenium, and Mwenka).
6 Days 5 Nights Mt Kilimanjaro Climbing, Hiking & Trekking (Machame Route) – From Arusha or Moshi Tanzania
This 6-day Kilimanjaro climb follows the Machame route, the most scenic route to the summit of Africa’s highest peak. The Machame Route is approximately 62 km/ 37 miles from gate to gate. It is designed for physically fit people with some hiking experience, but plenty of first-time trekkers use the route as well and do just fine. The tour begins and ends in Arusha. On the Machame Route your accommodation will be in tents with your meals served to you in your tents or if the weather is good, on a blanket outside. This route is a 6-day hike up Kilimanjaro allowing you time to acclimatize, which is important in preventing altitude sickness. There is a high success rate amongst hikers reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak. The descent is down the Mweka trail where you will stay at Mweka Camp for your final night. 6 Days 5 Nights Mt Kilimanjaro Climbing, Hiking & Trekking (Shira Route) – From Arusha or Moshi Tanzania
This 6-day Kilimanjaro climb follows the Shira Route, a difficult, varied and beautiful route that begins in the west, at Shira Gate and is nearly identical to the Lemosho route. In fact, Shira was the original route and Lemosho is the improved variation. Whereas Lemosho Route starts at the Londorossi Gates, the Shira Route bypasses this (by vehicle) and begins further north and higher up at the Shira Gate (11,800 feet). Therefore, climbers using Shira will miss out on hiking up one of Kilimanjaro’s ecological zones, the rainforest. This makes it is less favorable than its successor due to the relatively high altitude of the starting point. On the first day, hikers trek from Shira Gate to Simba Camp which is at a very similar altitude, allowing trekkers to acclimatize before joining the Lemosho Route on day two at Shira Camp 2. After Shira Camp 2 the route joins the Machame Route via Lava Tower and then descends to the Barranco Camp via the Southern Circuit (see map below). Like the Machame, Umbwe, and Lemosho Route, the ascent to Uhuru Peak is made via Barafu Camp and up the southern slopes of Kibo. Descent is via the Mweka Route.
