7 Days Kenya Ol Pejeta Mount Kenya Nakuru Mara Safari begins with a visit to the famous Sweetwaters Game Reserve is a 90,000-acre private ranch with magnificent views across the plains to the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya.

This game sanctuary is the closest reserve to Nairobi (3.5 hours drive) home to all the big five games and has the highest ratio of game-to-area of any park or reserve in Kenya.

Its popular waterhole is floodlit by night, providing excellent and secluded rarely seen game viewing. Game drives at Sweetwaters are indeed a pleasure.

Game viewing may also take the form of game walks accompanied by a resident Naturalist, game rides on horseback, Camel riding, night game drives, and “bush” lunches or dinners.

The Chimpanzee Sanctuary is most informative and entertaining and should be visited while in the Game Reserve.

The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is incorporated within the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and is the only place in Kenya where this highly endangered and remarkably intelligent species can be seen.

Then go to Mount Kenya which is the second tallest mountain in Africa. It is pristine wilderness with lakes, tarns, glaciers, dense forest, mineral springs, and a selection of rare and endangered species of animals.

Wildlife in the park includes Elephants, tree hyrax, white-tailed mongoose, suni, black-fronted duiker, mole rat, bushbucks, water buck, and Elands. Animals rarely seen include leopard, bongo, giant forest hog.

Our next stop is Lake Nakuru National Park dominated by a gentle undulating terrain with open bush and woodlands, typical of the dry rift valley vegetation.

Twenty-seven percent (27%) of the park is composed of the Lake Nakuru waters.  The park was declared a rhino sanctuary in 1983.

The Rhino stocking program which ensued received white rhinos from South Africa. Currently, the sanctuary has approximately 45 black and 31 white Rhinoceros.

The grand finale is the Masai Mara Game Reserve – Kenya’s most famous and finest game sanctuary.

In June and July each year, the wildebeests in their troops arrive at the Kenyan border, ready to cross the steep banks of the broad and fast-flowing Mara River.

This crossing is truly the greatest episode of the entire migration. Hot on their heels are the predators of the savannah –lion, cheetah, wild dog, jackal, hyena, and vultures.

The banks of the Mara River provide one of the best vantage points to witness the drama.

The Mara also offers wildlife in such variety and abundance that it is difficult to believe: over 450 species of animals have been recorded here.

You will most likely see the Big Five- lion, rhino, buffalo, leopard, and elephant. Not to mention numerous plain animals.

Safari Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: Nairobi – Ol Pejeta (Sweetwaters Game Sanctuary)

Today we travel to the exotic Sweetwaters Tented Camp in the secluded heart of Ol Pejeta Ranch and Rhino Reserve.

Here, these magnificent beasts are given sanctuary from those who would take their lives to sell their horns.

Here too, the Jane Goodall Institute operates a remarkable Chimpanzee Sanctuary where we meet the primates face-to-face.

Our camp also overlooks one of the busiest waterholes in the area and offers elephant, giraffe, and myriad plains game.

This is Africa as Teddy Roosevelt saw it years ago when he led one of the first safaris to tour Africa in comfort and splendor. Our tents at Sweetwaters will remind us of this bygone era.

Day 3: Ol Pejeta – Drive to Mount Kenya Safari Club

This morning we drive to the magnificent Mount Kenya Safari Club nestled in the foothills of snow-capped Mount Kenya.

Its sprawling colonial design was influenced by the late actor William Holden, who founded the Club in 1959 with two of his friends.

His love for Africa led him to make Kenya his second home for over twenty-five years.

The club has over the years attracted legions of internationally renowned members and guests from the world of politics, film, and theatre.

Sir Winston Churchill and Lord Mountbatten were members, and enjoyed sojourns at the club, as have legends Clark Gable and John Wayne, and more recent celebrities such as Robert Redford, Sean Connery, and Catherine Deneuve.

You too will receive the star treatment as you settle into your suite or cozy cottage. Pay a visit and do not miss the animal orphanage operated by the William Holden Wildlife Foundation.

Here wildlife foundlings are raised with great care and many are quite tame. It is an opportunity to get close to some wild creatures that despite a struggle have managed to survive.
