This 8-day tour opens in Nairobi and a night at the Giraffe Manor where you will meet some of Africa’s tallest house guests: giraffes wander the grounds freely and often poke their heads through the window to see what’s for breakfast – it’s quite a start to the safari!
The following morning, we fly to the Borana Conservancy, in Laikipia, which is one of the most exclusive places to safari in the country and stay at Borana Lodge.
The privately owned Lewa-Borana conservancy ecosystem is home to a great population of black and white rhinos, thanks to the pioneering conservation work taking place here, as well as other species endemic to the region.
In addition to game drives and walks, Borana Lodge has wonderful riding stables for those of all abilities, and with a 2-night stay, there is plenty of activities available including cycling, fine dining, fishing, game walks, helicopter scenic flights, massages, night drives and cultural tours among others.
Next, we take a short flight to Westgate Community Conservancy, close to Samburu National Reserve and Buffalo Springs. Here we stay for 2 nights at SaSaab Tented Camp located above the Uaso Nyiro River and overlooking the Samburu plains towards Mount Kenya.
Samburu is a place of rich natural diversity with an astounding number of animals from huge majestic elephants to lions, leopards and cheetahs and the ‘Samburu Special Five’: the Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Gerenuk antelope and Somali ostrich.
Back at camp, lounge on Moroccan-style cushions before a dip in the main swimming pool or in the privacy of your own plunge pool. Then take an evening camel ride for sundowners on a spectacular rocky outcrop with panoramic views.
Then it is off to the rolling grasslands of the Masai Mara and a stay at Salas camp with a private setting ensures unspoilt views and exclusive game sightings. Sala’s Camp is situated in the southern side of Kenya’s Masai Mara game reserve close to the confluence of the Sand and Keekorok Rivers.
It is among the first camps to witness the Wildebeest Migration as it passes from the Serengeti into the Mara. It is an area renowned for predator sightings and, even if the wildebeest herds are absent during your visit, you will still enjoy superb game viewing.
Activities include guided nature walks in the Sand River, wildlife drives in 4×4 safari vehicles and optional hot air ballooning (extra cost) at dawn, taking in a panoramic view of the savanna and iconic wildlife herds. The area is known for resident big cats, and all of the Big Five are on view here—elephant, lion, leopard, rhinoceros and buffalo.
After 2 Nights at Salas, you say goodbye, or ‘kwaheri’ in Swahili and head back to Nairobi. Fly out of Keekorok Airstrip at 11:00 am on a scheduled flight to Nairobi Wilson Airport. Here you will be met and transferred to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your flight home.
Depending on the time your international flight departs Nairobi, you may need to book a day room or excursions within Nairobi.

Safari Itinerary in Detail
Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi. Transfer to the Giraffe Manor Hotel
Giraffe Manor offers a unique, unforgettable African safari experience. There is no minimum age for safari. In fact, guests of all ages usually delight in meeting our resident Rothschild’s giraffe.
The giraffe roams the grounds of the wildlife sanctuary that surrounds our boutique hotel. Although they are completely wild, they love the nutritious treats that guests are able to feed them.
This allows you a unique opportunity to interact with Africa’s most elegant and beautiful safari animal. By offering a treat between your lips, you may even be rewarded with a slobbery giraffe kiss. You will also meet a host of ‘pumbas’ or warthogs that dart around the lawns.
There is so much to see and do in and around the manor. This is the ideal family holiday, which offers a unique opportunity to share an experience of a lifetime when travelling with kids to Africa.
You can also choose to visit the nearby Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, where you can meet rescued orphaned elephant babies from all over Kenya. Here you can learn about their rescue stories, and watch them being fed and put to bed.
The following morning provides an early but thrilling start to your African adventure, as you enjoy breakfasting with the giraffe. The giraffe at Giraffe Manor are wild and therefore we cannot guarantee interaction with them at any given time.
However, they are curious creatures and are always eager to investigate what snacks might be on offer!

Day 2 & 3: Nairobi – Fly to Borana Conservancy, Laikipia
Flying from Nairobi’s local Wilson Airport takes you to the wild Laikipia Plateau and Borana Lodge, set at the heart of a giant conservation area deeply dedicated to conservation and a haven for rhinos.
Here you mix game drives with walks, horse riding and mountain biking adventures in a land ringing with the sound of banana-beaked hornbills and cackling spotted hyenas – familiar characters from the movie.
You can also visit – and indeed have a sundowner drink on – another familiar image: Pride Rock, from which the lions surveyed their kingdom.
For the ultimate thrill, head out with armed rangers and conservationists to track rhinos on foot. The accommodation here is well designed to the needs of different sized families with children of different ages.

Days 4 & 5: Borana Conservancy – Fly to Samburu National Park
A flight takes you from Laikipia to the Samburu National Reserve and a luxurious lodge that looks out over rolling plains towards Mount Kenya. A drier, harsher landscape than Laikipia, Samburu is nevertheless excellent for wildlife and offers a unique mix of classic savannah animals and those of the northern deserts such as unique long-necked gerenuk antelopes.
You enjoy game drives before spending time with local conservationists and learning how to track creatures like lions and elephants. A family highlight is the camel safari that takes you for sundowner drinks – and quad biking is available as an optional extra.
Your accommodation is the wonderful Sasaab Camp, an especially well-appointed camp with private plunge pools in each suite and comforts such as Wi-Fi, a health and beauty spa, a gym, a babysitting service and free laundry.
There’s also the chance to spend a night in the wilderness: ask us about the Sasaab fly-camping experience and sleeping out under the stars.

Day 6 & 7: Samburu National Reserve – Fly to Masai Mara National Reserve
A morning flight gets you to the Masai Mara and your accommodation – Sala Camp – in time for lunch and an afternoon game drive. This is where the ‘Circle of Life’ plays out on the open savannah, a struggle for life and death – and most obviously during the annual Wildebeest Migration when over a million animals pass through the area.
But such is the nature of the Mara that the area teems with animals all year round and presents excellent game viewing regardless of whether the Migration is happening. It’s an especially good area for lions – there is a resident local pride – and the general plains game like zebra, giraffe, elephant, antelope and primates.
Game drives are the focus here but there are children’s activities lined up too, including nature walks and games such as volleyball. Child minders are available at camp and each suite has its own pool.

Day 8: Masai Mara National Reserve – Fly to Nairobi

Note that you may like to book a day room at a hotel or go on an excursion in Nairobi depending on what time your international flight departs – ask us for more information.
