8 Days 7 Nights Kenya Fly-in Safari Laikipia Maasai Mara

8 Days 7 Nights Kenya Fly-in Safari Laikipia Masai Mara combines two of our favourite properties in Kenya that are family-owned and run – 3 Nights Safari at Laikipia Wilderness Camp (in Laikipia) and 4 Nights Safari in Tangulia Mara Camp (in Masai Mara Game Reserve).

These intimate camps on this luxury safari all have a maximum of eight tents and are carefully positioned in exclusive locations in Laikipia and Masai Mara.  These properties are run by people who are passionate about Africa, their country and conservation and community.

They know the wildlife and the people of their area intimately. They invite you into their home as welcome guests. Your journey begins with a flight from Nairobi to Laikipia Wilderness Camp – a small and personal family-run bush camp with beautiful views of Mt Kenya and the surrounding area.

The area is fantastic for big numbers of elephants, giraffes, hippos, Grevy’s zebra, leopards, wild dogs, lions, striped and spotted hyenas, aardwolves, aardvarks, and over 280 species of birds. The camp has six spacious tents and is supported by a small team of excellent staff.

Laikipia Wilderness Camp specializes in game walks as much as game drives. Activities are varied and include guided walking safaris, game drives, night drives, swimming, tubing and fishing in the river, Samburu village visits and birding.

After 3 Nights in Laikipia, we fly to the Masai Mara National Reserve – Kenya’s premier safari experience, a vast expanse of savannah grassland heavily populated year-round with wildlife. There is always a good chance of seeing lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo and wildebeest. You will be able to enjoy a shared game drive and optional guided safari walks.

In the Mara, Tangulia Mara Camp boasts a fantastic location overlooking the Olotulo-Murt springs and salt lick. With few natural salt licks in the Mara ecosystem, wildlife activity in front of the camp is constant with a variety of animals passing through.

The camp’s ideal location, just north of the Musiara area, allows easy access for game drives around the Musiara Marsh, the short grass plains, and Rhino Ridge, into the Reserve or across the Mara River bridge into the Mara Triangle which is west of the river.

The camp owners Jackson Looseyia & Dominic Nchoe are more than qualified to give guests a truly authentic insight into the Maasai culture, customs, beliefs and knowledge of the fauna and flora here.

Safari Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: Nairobi – Fly to Laikipia

After breakfast at the hotel in Nairobi/ residence, we transfer to Nairobi’s domestic airport for a scheduled light aircraft flight to Laikipia, Northern Kenya. You will be met on arrival in Nanyuki Airstrip followed by a transfer to Laikipia Wilderness camp which will take about 1.5 hours with some game viewing en route.

This afternoon will be at leisure until you gather late afternoon for high tea before your first game-viewing activity. Meals are simple homemade affairs usually served outside around a campfire.

Day 2: Explore Laikipia

Start the day with an early morning game drive in search of endangered wild dogs, and return to camp for a late breakfast. During the day you will be able to go out and enjoy the conservancy with rock climbing, swimming, river tubing, rafting or even fishing.

A personal favourite is fly camping under the stars, heading out late afternoon for a game drive which ends as your camp for the night, enjoys dinner and drinks around the fire before sleeping under the stars. Return to camp for breakfast in the morning.

Day 4: Laikipia – Fly to the Masai Mara Game Reserve

Transfer to airstrip for scheduled light aircraft flight to the Masai Mara. Arrive in time for lunch and afternoon game drive.  In the Maasai Mara, Tangulia is another traditional tented camp with a similarly personal, low-key atmosphere.

It is owned and managed by Jackson Looseyia, of the BBC’s ‘Big Cat Diary’, and that is really what this camp is all about: the guiding and the wildlife. The Mara ecosystem has fantastic year-round game viewing, in particular the big cats, but Tangulia also has access to the famed river crossings of the great wildebeest migration July-September.

Four nights here offers a good opportunity to make the most of the amazing wildlife of the Mara.

Meal Plan {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 5, 6 & 7: Explore the Masai Mara Game Reserve

Tangulia Mara Camp is ideally located in private lands just outside of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, allowing for guided walks on the slopes of the escarpment and visits to welcoming local villages.

Each day game drives can access areas such as the Musiara Marsh, home to the famous Marsh Pride of lions, and the Mara Triangle, the triangle-shaped area of land to the west of the Mara River.

The Mara Triangle is a particularly less-travelled area of the Maasai Mara, as it’s only accessible from a few select points. This makes it far more exclusive than the Maasai Mara National Reserve in terms of vehicles and people.

The wildlife that may be seen in the Mara includes lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and other plains game and small species.

Activities at Tangulia Mara camp will include Game walks – guided walks on the slopes of the escarpment outside of the Mara reserve, Cultural & village visits and Bush breakfasts & lunches.
