Tarangire National Park

Beginning and ending in Arusha, Tanzania, this wonderful 8-day road trip takes a rewarding circular route through Tanzania’s top game parks. Start with the top wildlife destinations on Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit – Lake Manyara National Park, then world-famous Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and finally end at Tarangire National Park.

The tour begins with a road trip to Lake Manyara National Park located 100km’s (60 miles) southwest of Arusha, near Mount Kilimanjaro. Lake Manyara is famous for its large elephant population, tree-climbing lions, and huge flamingo flocks, numbering in the thousands.

The park is also home to an abundance of hippos, as well as plenty of buffalo, zebra, and wildebeest. Lion, leopard, rhino, and giraffe inhabit the park, along with bushbuck, impala, and warthog. Lake Manyara National Park also hosts great numbers of baboons and monkeys, as well as banded mongoose and klipspringers.

Day two takes us north-west towards Serengeti National Park, one of the best safari destinations in the world, rivaling Kenya’s Masai Mara. Here you will see a rich variety of wildlife roaming the African savannahs that stretch out as far as the eye can see. Serengeti is loved for its sweeping plains, abundant wildlife, and the breathtaking annual Great Migration.

We spend day three and day four on game drives looking for the big five – lions, leopards, rhinos, Cape Buffalo, and elephants plus other animals such as wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelle, zebra, giraffe, eland, topi, kongoni, impala, and other antelope. The Serengeti is also home to lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas.

On day five, we take a game drive through Serengeti National Park on our way out to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. We make a stop at the Olduvai Gorge, a deep ravine in the East African Rift Valley.

The gorge features one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites, hosting some of the earliest fossils of our humanoid ancestors. We visit the Olduvai Gorge Museum to see the excavated remains of our ancestors, with Homo erectus remains that date as far back as 1.2 million years ago.

Day six begins with a drive to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater for an action-packed day of game viewing in this wildlife paradise. Our 4×4 game drive takes us through the diverse habitats of the crater floor, where we encounter a variety of wild animals. While in the crater we have a picnic lunch.

The Ngorongoro Crater is renowned for its high concentration of animals, with most wildlife species represented here. Due to the high density of animal populations, we are likely to see an excellent array of animals in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Wildlife includes lions, cheetahs, hyenas, leopards, jackals, serval cats, and the endangered wild hunting dogs. There are over 550 recorded species of birds in the Conservation Area, of which some are resident and others are migratory.

On day seven we drive to our next game viewing destination Tarangire National Park, known for its big herds of elephants. Tarangire hosts an array of wild animals, including lions and buffalos, as well as various antelopes, wildebeest, giraffes, and zebras.

The Tarangire national park covers some 2600km² of wilderness, characterized by undulating plains dotted with baobab and acacia trees.

Day eight begins with game viewing and admiring the scenery in Tarangire National Park. There are about 2500 elephants in the larger Tarangire ecosystem of 20 000 km². The game park is home to lots of zebras and wildebeest, as well as plenty of giraffes, buffalos, waterbucks, elands, and impalas.

In the early afternoon, we depart Tarangire and return to Arusha where our magical 8 Days 7 Nights Tanzania Safari Manyara Serengeti Ngorongoro & Tarangire comes to a close.

Safari Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: Arusha – Drive to Lake Manyara National Park

Our first game viewing destination in Tanzania is the Lake Manyara National Park, one of the region’s wildlife gems. Approaching this relatively small yet diverse national park we are met by stunning views over this beautiful wilderness area.

Located along the western edge of the Great Rift Valley escarpment the game park is set around the Manyara Lake, a soda lake that attracts a multitude of birds. Lake Manyara is a good place to see water birds, including large flocks of flamingoes when they migrate to its shores.

Days 2: Lake Manyara – Drive to Serengeti National Park

From Lake Manyara Park we continue north-west to Serengeti National Park, Masai Mara’s equally famous southern neighbor. Prepare for the open savannahs that epitomize untamed Africa. Here the wildlife drama of Africa unfolds in the captivating battle for the survival of the fittest.

This is where the spectacle of the Great Migration plays itself out every year when millions of hoofed mammals migrate in search of fresh vegetation. This mass movement of herbivores is made up mostly of stampeding wildebeest, hence the phenomenon’s other name – the Great Wildebeest Migration.

The wildebeest are joined by Grant’s gazelles, zebras, many other antelopes (impala, eland, waterbuck, roan, and more), and an assortment of other herbivorous creatures, like giraffes and warthogs. Such as massive congregation of prey species naturally attracts a menagerie of predators, from the big cats (lion, leopard, and cheetah) to the scavenging hyenas, jackals and foxes.

Day 3 & 4: Explore the Serengeti

Game drives are best taken as the sun rises, for that is when the animals are on the move, consequently, we are up at dawn to start the day with a Serengeti game drive, followed by a welcome, hearty breakfast back at the camp.

The game viewing here in Serengeti National Park is sensational all year round being home to healthy populations of Africa’s Big Five – rhino, lion, buffalo, elephant, and leopard as well as huge numbers of various antelope species such as eland, topi, kudu, impala, oribi, waterbuck, and gazelle.

Cheetah, hippo, giraffe, serval cat, crocodile, hyena, and a rich array of other wildlife including numerous monkey, mongoose, and rodent species also inhabit the Serengeti, along with over 500 bird species!

Day 5: Serengeti – Drive to the Ngorongoro Crater

Day five of this tour starts with an early breakfast, before driving to the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater of Tanzania. Along the way, we stop at the Olduvai Gorge, a deep ravine in the East African Rift Valley.

En route, we stop for a picnic lunch and enjoy game viewing.

Day 6: Explore the Ngorongoro Crater

This morning we descend 2,000 feet into the giant caldera of this extinct volcano. This magnificent natural amphitheater contains the largest concentration of animals in all of Africa. Because the grasses are short, the game is easily spotted and can be approached quite closely.

We spend a splendid morning on the floor of the crater observing wildlife in this ageless World Heritage Site. The Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to the Big Five of Africa (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo).

Known as the Eden of Africa and considered the 8th Natural Wonder of the World, Ngorongoro hosts around 25000 large animals, one of the highest concentrations of big game in Africa. Wildlife found in the crater includes hyena, wildebeest, zebra, serval cat, cheetah, Thompson, and Grant gazelles, as well as about 400 bird species.

And with a permanent water source, Tarangire is virtually guaranteed excellent game viewing at all times, including lion (some tree-climbing!), leopard, and a herd of 3,500 elephants.

Spend the afternoon exploring Tarangire, one of Tanzania’s ‘secret’ wildlife havens… teeming with large populations of elephant, predators, and their fleet-footed prey.
