Sanctuary Kusini Camp

9 Days 8 Nights Kenya and Tanzania Luxury Fly-in Safari with Sanctuary Retreats Camps:  Our 9-day fly-in safari offers you the most convenient way of experiencing Kenya and Tanzania in a short space of time.

Flying in a light aircraft from reserve to reserve – rather than being driven – will allow you to see the best of Tarangire, Serengeti and the Masai Mara in just over a week. It will also give you the rare privilege of seeing this incredible landscape and its impressive herds, rocky outcrops and meandering rivers from the air.

You will also have a more relaxed timetable and will be able to spend more time at each of the breath-taking camps along the way.

Accommodation include the Sanctuary Retreats which operates some of the finest lodges and safari camps in Kenya and Tanzania – Sanctuary Swala Safari Camp, Sanctuary Kusini Safari Camp and Sanctuary Olonana Safari Camp.

Your safari begins in Arusha, but not in a city hotel. Instead, you spend your first night in Africa at Arusha Coffee Lodge set on the outskirts of Arusha on Tanzania’s largest coffee plantation, just five minutes from Arusha Airport and the ideal starting point on a Tanzanian safari.

Fly to Tarangire National Park best known for its elephant herds and tree-climbing lions. Tarangire is home to all the classic African savannah species plus a few unusual ones – such as the long-necked gerenuk – that you won’t see in the Serengeti. It’s home to all the big predators and with 550 species of bird on the tick list, it’s a fabulous destination for bird watchers.

Enjoy excellent game viewing from Sanctuary Swala Camp, or set out in an open 4×4 vehicle or on foot with your trained and knowledgeable guide.

After the fun of a walking safari and night drives in Tarangire, you will transfer to one of the most game-filled places in Africa: Serengeti National Park. Your next two nights are at Sanctuary Kusini Safari Camp where they days will be spent on game drives to search for the Big 5, zebra, cape buffalo, varied plains game, as well as lion, cheetah and other predators.

While the Serengeti offers excellent sightings of the Migration, game viewing here is excellent all year round. Another way to experience the sprawling savannah is on a hot-air balloon safari.

Next, we fly to the Masai Mara and spend three nights are at Olonana Safari Camp, a luxurious and intimate lodge perfectly positioned adjacent to the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.

During the Wildebeest Migration between July and October, you will enjoy easy access to the greatest spectacle on Earth as in excess of a million Wildebeest cross the Mara River and on their endless journey to new grazing land.

Outside the Migration season, a host of resident animals remain, and you are able to enjoy Big 5 sightings. Game drives and safari walks get you close to nature, Maasai cultural visits enhance the experience, and hot-air balloon rides give you a bird’s eye view of this incredible landscape.

On your final day, you will fly from Kichwa Tembo Airstrip back to Wilson Airport in Nairobi. There you will have the use of a private vehicle and a driver for a few hours before your flight, allowing you to take in some final sights or do some last-minute shopping in Kenya’s capital.

Day 5: Explore Serengeti National Park

Remain close to camp with morning and afternoon game drives. The area around Sanctuary Kusini is famed for its cheetah. Whilst at Sanctuary Kusini you have the chance to contribute to cheetah conservation through the Cheetah Watch Campaign by submitting your sightings of cheetah in Tanzania to the Serengeti Cheetah Project.

On a morning game drive learn how to identify cheetah and record their behavior before combining this data with photos and a record of their location.

This information is sent to the Cheetah Project’s researchers who use it to help them monitor cheetahs, and in return will provide you, where possible, with a background of your cheetah, including its name, age and its family history.

Alternatively, you may prefer a full day game drive into the heart of the Serengeti with a picnic lunch. The open plains spread out as far as the eye can see so it is no surprise that the name Serengeti comes from the Maasai language meaning “endless plains.”

The park itself covers 14,763 square kilometers, making it one of the world’s largest wildlife sanctuaries and hosts one of the world’s largest land migrations. Every year 1.5 million wildebeest migrate from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara followed by hundreds of thousands of zebra, gazelle and other plains game in search of fresh grazing pastures.

Sanctuary Kusini is ideally placed to catch the migration that can be found in this area of the park from mid-December to April when the zebra and wildebeest drop their young.

This evening, return to camp and climb to the top of the kopje for stunning 360-degree views of the Serengeti. Relax with your preferred drink as you watch the setting sun paint the Serengeti with pinks, oranges and reds.

Following dinner retire to the kopje where you may take this rare opportunity to enjoy a star safari as the camp manager unravels the myths of the night sky.

The 14 luxury tents at Sanctuary Olonana are very spacious and have floor to ceiling mosquito netting, en-suite bathrooms with hot showers, flush lavatories, solar lighting and large, river view verandas.

Day 7: Explore the Maasai Mara National Reserve

This morning after breakfast at the camp, it is time to explore the Masai Mara with your guide. The Mara is a fabulous place for seeing big cats and all of the big five, a variety of plains game and over 300 bird species.

The plains offer a rich variety of food for the dominant predators including lion, leopard, hyena and cheetah. Spot elephants browsing amongst the large herds of wildebeest and topi, eland and buffalo, Thompson’s and Grant’s gazelle.

In the Mara River, hippos submerge to snort and grumble while crocodiles sunbathe, mouths agape, on the riverbanks. From around July to October, the Masai Mara also hosts the greatest show on earth – the wildebeest migration.

There are many different activities available at Sanctuary Olonana. You might choose to walk with our naturalist and learn about plants, trees, insects and even how to approach animals on foot, as your guide shows you how to spot animal signs which are everywhere but not easily noticed.

After an exciting game activity, you can relax by the pool or revitalize at the mini-spa which offers a range of treatments from facials to body massages. Sanctuary Olonana has earned a Gold Award from Ecotourism Kenya.

You can visit the wetlands which cleanses wastewater before returning it to the natural environment or take part in our tree planting initiative which offers an opportunity to purchase and paint an indigenous tree, leaving a positive mark on a piece of Africa.

Float gently over the plains with a bird’s eye view of the game below as the sun rises slowly over the horizon. After around one hour the balloon lands and nearby a full breakfast is served in the middle of the bush with glasses of bubbly to toast your flight!

Try fishing for the legendary giant Nile perch found in these waters as you explore the myriad of tiny islands. Stop and visit a traditional fishing village before flying back to the Masai Mara.

On your last evening your guide will drive you out into the bush where a private and secluded clearing has been prepared for an elegant dinner in the middle of the wilderness. The table setting is as sophisticated and elegant as found in the finest restaurants.

Candles flicker in the darkness, throwing golden lights on the table cloth as smiling waiters serve a delicious dinner. After dinner, retire to the warmth of the campfire where brandies and liqueurs are served as you absorb the peace and beauty of an African night.
