Aberdare National Park is located in the Central Highlands west of Mount Kenya. The Aberdare Range is a long, narrow massif, stretching north to south for about 70km with its southern end about 80km north of Nairobi. Aberdare National Park is 160 km (99 miles) from Nairobi.

Along the centre of the range are the main peaks: Chebuswa (3,364 m), Satima (4,001 m), and Table Mountain (3,791m) are in the Northern Moorland; Rurimueria (3,860 m) and Maratini (3,698 m) are in the Central Moorland, and Kinangop (3,906 m) and The Elephant (3,590 m) are in the Southern Moorland.

The Park is renowned for its torrential waterfalls plunging from cloud-shrouded heights to spray-filled ravines. They include: the Gura Waterfall, the most precipitous fall in Kenya, which cascades 300m into an impenetrable ravine; the spectacularly lovely Karura Falls; the Chania Falls; the Magura Falls; and Queen’s Cave.

The prolific bird life features 250 recorded species. Mammals of the forest zone include blue and colobus monkey, leopard, lion, elephant, warthog, black rhino, giant forest hog, bushbuck, buffalo, red duiker, and suni. Mammals of the moorlands include serval, eland, several species of duiker, and the rare bongo antelope.

Day 1: Nairobi – Aberdare National Park (The Ark or Treetops) 

0800 Hours – Departure: Pick up from Nairobi hotel/airport and drive north through the central highlands, featuring coffee and tea plantations, towards Nyeri

1200 Hours – Lunch & Check-in: Arrive at the base hotel (Aberdare Country Club or Outspan Hotel) for lunch and check-in procedures

1430 Hours – Transfer to Lodge: Transfer into Aberdare National Park to your chosen tree lodge (The Ark or Treetops Lodge)

1530 Hours – Afternoon/Evening Game Viewing: Settle in and enjoy afternoon tea. Spend the evening observing wildlife (elephants, rhinos, leopards) from the lodge’s balconies, which overlook floodlit waterholes and salt licks

0800 Hours: This morning we depart Nairobi and proceed north, driving through lush tea and coffee estates of central Kenya to the Aberdare Country Club or the Outspan Hotel Nyeri for lunch.

1200 Hours: Arrive for lunch at The Aberdare Country Club or the Outspan Hotel Nyeri where you will be assisted with the check-in formalities.

After lunch relax and enjoy a cup of tea/ coffee/ Hot chocolate before you are transferred to the Aberdare National Park. Your accommodations tonight are at either the Ark Tree Lodge or the Treetops Hotel.

Nestled in the foothills of the Aberdare ranges, the lodges are famous for high perches and balconies, overlooking a salt lick and waterhole.
