Wildlife and Birdlife in Amboseli National Park

Amboseli is home to a wide range of wildlife species. The savannah plains are teeming with giraffes, Grant’s and Thompson’s gazelles, zebras, wildebeest, hartebeest, waterbuck, eland, and buffalo. In the drier regions, sightings may include the gerenuk, fringe-eared oryx, bat-eared foxes, jackals, caracal, and serval cats. Lions and hyenas are regularly seen, though leopards and cheetahs remain more elusive.

The park is especially famous for its elephants. Around 1,500 elephants thrive in Amboseli, making it one of the highest concentrations anywhere in Africa. Thanks to conservation efforts and excellent protection, elephants here reach maturity with their enormous tusks intact — and the big tuskers dominate the Amboseli landscape.

These include raptors such as martial eagles, fish eagles, and secretary birds, along with water birds like long-toed lapwings, rufous-bellied herons, crowned cranes, kingfishers, pelicans, and hammerkops.

The Taveta golden weaver is commonly seen, while the endangered Madagascan squacco heron and numerous Palearctic migrants make appearances depending on the season.
