Amboseli Public campsite is a campground located on the southeastern end of Amboseli National Park. The campsite is located 200 meters from the Amboseli National Park Headquarters – Kimana and 240 km from Nairobi (approximately a 3-hour drive). The closest airport is Amboseli National Park Airstrip.
Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya’s most popular parks. The name “Amboseli” comes from a Maasai word meaning “salty dust”, and it is one of the best places in Africa to view large herds of elephants up close.
The camp has fundamental facilities and can accommodate up to 60 campers. Facilities provided include firewood, toilet facilities, water, and a bathroom. Guests need to carry their drinking water, food supply, sleeping bags, and tents.
There are well-manicured camping grounds, where guests are welcome to pitch their tents. The grounds are spacious and can accommodate up to 60 guests.
Amboseli Public campsite has a cooking area where guests are welcome to prepare their meals. In the evening, guests can set up a bonfire under the starry skies and catch up with other guests. There is a small bar selling warm beer and soft drinks.
Nature lovers can explore five different habitats here, ranging from the dried-up bed of Lake Amboseli, wetlands with Sulphur springs, the savannah, and woodlands. They can also visit the local Maasai community, who live around the park, and experience their authentic culture.
The park offers spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro and Meru, and large elephant herds are often viewed in an unusual swamp habitat. More than 425 species of birds have been recorded, and plenty of wildlife species can be spotted, including lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant, zebra, hippo, black rhino, Maasai giraffe, oryx, wildebeest, gerenuk, and impala.
