Located south of Lake Manyara, this tour offers a rare look at “unspoiled” cultures where ancient marriage, burial, and daily rituals are still practiced.

Babati District is located along the Arusha-Dodoma road in the Rift Valley, South of Lake Manyara National Park and West of Tarangire National Park. Babati is 172 km (107 miles) south of Arusha.

Both Babati and the nearby Hanang district in the Manyara region are dominated by two ethnic groups, the Barbaig, a semi-nomadic pastoralist tribe, and the Iraqw, a Cushitic-speaking ethnic group.

The tour includes exploring their traditional lifestyle, history, art, religion, and the things that shape their way of life. Other optional activities for the day may consist of a fishing excursion in local canoes on Lake Babati, with opportunities to see hippos.

0700 Hours – Departure from Arusha: Pick up from hotel/residence in Arusha town and drive south towards the Babati/Hanang area

1000 Hours – Arrival & Introduction: Arrive in Babati, the administrative center of the Manyara region. Meet local Gorowa guides for a briefing on the day’s activities

1030 Hours – Lake Babati Canoe Adventure: Experience a traditional canoe trip on Lake Babati. View hippos and a wide variety of bird species up close

1230 Hours – Cultural Immersion & Lunch: Visit the Barabaig (Man’gati) tribe. Walk through the villages, experience local beer brewing, and share a traditional lunch

0730 Hours: After breakfast, we transfer to Babati Rural District of the Manyara Region of Tanzania.

1000 Hours: Upon arrival, you will be met by a local guide and walk to Managhat village original home of the Gorowa tribe but now also a home for migrants. You will see dairy farming activities such as farming with ox plows biogas system, local Gorowa huts, and a killer beekeeping project at the bottom of Mount Kwaraa (2,415 meters).

After you will climb Bambaay Hill from where you see the beautiful Rift Valley landscape with Lake Babati and Lake Manyara. The Rift Valley Escarpment is in the background and the Maasai Steppe at the east. Later you visit a respected Gorowa tribesman, Mzee Kwaraa, at his home.

He will tell you about Gorowa culture, marriage, rain prayers, burial, and religious and circumcision rituals. Optionally one can row, fish, and view hippos on Lake Babati, using local canoes or enjoy one of the many activities available in the village.
