Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro 1 Day Shira Route - Hiking Excursion

This Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro 1 Day Shira Route is a short trek geared for people who like to trek but reaching the summit isn’t a “must-do”, and allows one to experience the excitement of hiking on the highest peak on the African continent.

Hiking to the Shira Plateau offers a different perspective of the mountain with stunning views of Kibo Peak (weather permitting) it’s also a great spot for taking photos. This day hike to the beautiful Shira Plateau begins at 3,407m and takes you through the shrub-steppe on the lower slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

You’ll hike for approximately 2 to 3 hours, with a little elevation gain to 3,610m, to Shira Base Camp which is used by people trekking the world’s tallest freestanding mountain. You’ll have your picnic lunch there and you can watch the hustle and bustle of guides, porters, cooks, and clients arriving and setting up camp for the night. In the early afternoon, you’ll hike back to the vehicles for your return trip to Moshi or Arusha.

Shira Plateau is a tact of moorland roughly 5 miles across in each direction; level on the west where it abuts the Shira Ridge, titled upwards on the east where its gradually steepening slope merges into those of Kibo which can be seen at a very close range on a clear day.

It lies in general between 11,500 and 13,500 feet. Ascending to this height one encounters the rich vegetation and tree-dancing colobus monkeys. There are carcasses of eland and elephants higher on the mountain proving that these larger animals are occasional visitors.

Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro 1 Day Shira Route Itinerary

The day starts early from your lodge then an hour’s drive through the rich agricultural area at the base of the mountain, this varies from hand-tilled small holdings to large commercial farms before giving way first to plantation forest and finally to indigenous forest.

After the paperwork at the Londorosi gate (Kilimanjaro National Park Western Gate), the road climbs more steeply up a rough track moving quickly through the different layers of vegetation from thick mountain forest where you can look out for Colobus Monkeys in the trees.

Your hike through the beautifully rugged landscape of Shira Plateau starts at 3,500 m above sea level. Along different trails and accompanied by a ranger, you can enjoy views of Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s highest peak, and its northern glaciers, when the weather permits.

The vast plains of neighboring Amboseli National Park in Kenya and the deep gorge of the Simba River contrast the views of the world’s highest free-standing mountain. When you reach the northern rim of Shira Crater, take a quick stop at different observation points and see the volcanic cones dotting the landscape below.

Hike at your own pace and enjoy a picnic lunch under the open sky along the way. It’s a moderate hike and you don’t need to be an athlete to be able to enjoy it. However, at 3,500m the air is thinner, so pace your step, and enjoy the untouched landscapes and the presence of the mighty Kilimanjaro.

Spend the day trekking in the approximately 3 hours or more. The guide will carry trail food and a picnic lunch.
