Elephant Hill Aberdare National Park Nairobi 1 Day Tour is one of the African Spice Safaris Hiking day tours from Nairobi – Kenya to the Elephant Hill located in the Aberdares National Park. The Aberdares Ranges are situated west of Mt Kenya in the central highlands between Nyeri and Naivasha and stretch 70km long from North to South. They are the water catchment area feeding two of the largest dams supplying over 95% of Nairobi’s water needs, i.e. Ndakaini Dam on the slopes of Mt. Kenya.

The Elephant Hill is about 3906 meters/ 12815 feet in altitude making it a perfect trek if you intend to climb higher mountains like Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, Mount Meru, or Mount Elgon. This tour can be booked as a private excursion from Nairobi and departs any day of the week. Elephant Hill is located 90 km away from Nairobi and the hike begins at Njabini Forest Gate.
The walking duration takes about 7 hours and the hike ends back at Njabini Forest Gate where we board our safari vehicle for a transfer back to Nairobi. The hike is rated as moderate to high. You need to be reasonably fit to do this climb. The highlights include amazing scenery, bird-watching wildlife along the trail, plants, and flowers e.g. Loberia, Giant Heather, etc.
They’re are also wonderful views of the surrounding countryside including Naivasha, Thika, Sasumua Dam, and Ndakaini Dam among others.

Elephant Hill Aberdare National Park Nairobi 1 Day Tour Itinerary
0600 Hours: After an early breakfast we depart from your hotel/ residence for the Aberdare National Park to Njabini Forest Station (former Kinangop South Forest Station), about 4 km from Njabini shopping center. The drive takes about 2 hours.
0800 Hours: We arrive at the Njabini Forest Station and meet our ranger/ guides who will accompany you to the summit.
0830 Hours: After a short briefing, the hike begins. The terrain goes through the forest, thickets, bamboo forest, and the cold mist on open areas.
The hike up the hill takes 4 to 5 hours from an altitude of 2500 meters at the Forest Station. The first 5km is over a relatively flat plantation forest followed by a Bamboo zone.
The follows the alpine zone with Giant Lobelia, Tussock Grass, and Giant Heather among others. At the elephant’s rump, one can view Sasumua Dam down below to your right, and the distant Ndakaini Dam to your left.
The rest of the hike goes over slightly rocky terrain at an altitude of over 3400 meters above sea level, with the temperature dropping significantly, as you pick your way across the elephant’s back.
1300 Hours: Once at the summit one can see the distinctive Kinangop peak, the second-highest point on the Aberdares can be seen to the north.
1400 Hours: The descent is just as trying as the ascent, taking a big toll on the knees, and another 3 to 4 hours to the Forest station.
1700 Hours: After conquering the challenge and thoroughly testing our fitness and acclimatization prowess, we will embark on our journey back to Nairobi:
1830 Hours to 1900 Hours: Arrive back in Nairobi
