Elephants Giraffes Kazuri Beads Karen Blixen Tour Highlights

Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is situated on the outskirts of Nairobi (approximately 45 minutes drive). David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is located within the Nairobi National Park and the sanctuary cares for orphaned baby Elephants, tame black and white rhino calves, and adults.

At 1100 Hours, the baby animals are brought from the National Park for a mud bath at the orphanage, where for an hour you can get close to them and sometimes touch them. You may not feed the animals but will get a chance to view the handlers feeding them.

The private session strictly between 1500 Hours to 1600 Hours each day allows you to see the animals in private and you will be able to interact with them. This requires booking through African Spice Safaris.

Giraffe Centre (AFEW Langata)

Have you ever been kissed with an 18-inch tongue? The Nairobi Giraffe Centre tour gives a completely up close and personal interaction where guests have the opportunity to view giraffes as well as feed them.

The center has rescued, hand-reared, and released around 500 orphaned giraffes back into the wild since opening in 1979.

There is also an education center with lots of information about the Rothschild giraffe’s breeding and conservation of the rarest of Kenya’s three giraffe species.

Kazuri Bead Factory and Workshop
The next stop is the Kazuri Bead Center – a self-help women’s project where handmade ceramics and jewelry are produced.  A visit to the workshop and craft centre will take around one hour and here you will see the various processes.

A knowledgeable guide will show you around where you will see the whole process from the molding of raw clay through to the glazing, decorating, and threading of beads as finished products. The salesroom is attractively laid out and a beautiful place to visit.

Kazuri means “small and beautiful” in Swahili and this describes every beautifully hand-made ceramic bead that is shaped by hand by the women who work at the Kazuri workshop. The beads are kiln-fired once, glazed, and then fired again before being strung.

Karen Blixen Museum

Karen Blixen Museum is located on the outskirts of Nairobi on Karen Road. Its history dates back to 1914, during the First World War, with the arrival of Karen Blixen from Denmark.

At the foot of Ngong Hills, Karen Blixen established herself as a farmer. After her departure in 1931, the suburbs retained the commemorative home of Karen.

The house was used during the filming of the famous movie that immortalized Karen Blixen’s book by the same name (‘Out of Africa’). The Museum has beautifully landscaped gardens and an all-encompassing Ngong Hills view. Time takes approximately 1 Hour at most.
