Greystoke Mahale Mountains Camp Tanzania

Greystoke Mahale Mountains Camp Tanzania is an exclusive bush lodge located in Mahale Mountain National Park in Western Tanzania along Kangwena Beach on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Mahale Mountain National Park is home to the world’s largest known population of chimpanzees.

There are no roads within 60 km of the camp, and access is only by aircraft using the shared charter flights which operate on Mondays and Thursdays only from Arusha, or by private charter. Kalolwa Airstrip is the closest airstrip and it’s about 1.5 hours by boat to the camp.

The chimpanzee population in Mahale Mountains National Park is the largest known and due to its size and remoteness, the chimpanzees flourish. The closest major town to Mahale Mountains National Park is  Kigoma. it’s about 130km north of Mahale along the lakeshore.

Greystoke Mahale Mountains Camp Tanzania consists of 6 thatched bandas with en-suite bathrooms and uninterrupted lake views. The main lodge area is an iconic image, a huge thatched canopy framed in the middle of the beach with a backdrop of the lush rainforest.  The bandas are scattered along a soft-sand beach. Built from reclaimed dhow wood, they are two stories high.

The rooms are very open, encouraging ‘barefoot luxury’ with wooden walkways to the bathroom and also to the top deck which has a relaxing area with great views out over the lake. The bathrooms have flush toilets, powerful showers, and hot water on demand and are partially open to the forest.

This is usually the setting for the camp’s delicious buffet breakfasts and light lunches, with everyone eating together.  Greystoke has a large central dining area with a communal dining table, Library, and open-air bar. Most meals are taken in the main building or outside on the beach. 

Three-course dinners are served in the dining room too, following pre-dinner drinks at the spectacular ‘Sunset Bar’. This is found on rocks at the end of the beach, and it’s the perfect place for sundowners at the end of every day!.

The lodge also contains a reading room, on the upper floor. There are a few board games here too, and breathtaking views over the lake waters. Mahale Mountain National Park, forest is home to much more than the Chimpanzees such as bushbuck, bush pigs, leopards, amazing birdlife, and plenty of other primate species. 

Activities available at Greystoke Mahale Mountains Camp Tanzania include; tracking habituated chimpanzees, kayaking, Boar Rides, chimpanzee safaris, Fishing, Hike the forest paths looking for birds and butterflies, or swimming in deep water from a dhow. The camp is accessed only by boat, a trip that gives the visitor some idea of the extensive forests that stretch along the lakeshore.

Check-in – Check-out Time

* Rooms will be available from 1300hrs on the day of arrival. Early check-in will be subject to the manager’s discretion on the day of arrival
* Rooms must be vacated by 1000hrs. Clients wishing to keep their rooms for longer will be charged 75% of the room rate in the High Season and 50% in the Low Season

Children’s Rates & Policy

* The minimum age is 5 years to 21 years
* Child park entry and camping/concession fees apply for up to 16 years
* Children aged 12 years and under must share a room or family tent/room with an adult
* Children under 12 years are not permitted to walk, chimp, or fly camp due to safety reasons
* A child occupying a single room will be charged at the full adult rate plus a single supplement

Family Rooms & Triple – Family rooms sleep 2 Adults and 2 Children

*  The camp can accommodate up to two triples in each camp – the third bed in a room is suitable for up to 16 years only and we do not allow 3 adults in a triple
