Kahawa Shamba Cultural Tour | Kilimanjaro Region – 30 minutes from Moshi Town

The Kahawa Shamba Cultural Tour is a 3- to 5-hour guided immersive experience near Moshi, Tanzania, on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, focusing on the “bean-to-cup” process of organic coffee production. The tour takes place in the Kilimanjaro region, 30 minutes from Moshi town.

Operated by local farmers, it offers insights into Chagga culture, coffee picking, roasting, and brewing, usually including a traditional lunch. The name “Kahawa Shamba” translates to “Coffee Farm” in Kiswahili.

The tour includes pickup/drop-off at your hotel, a 3-hour village walking tour, end-to-end coffee production the “traditional way”, a full traditional lunch, and an expert local guide.

The guides are usually from one of the villages engaged in this cooperative coffee production. They are extremely knowledgeable about both the coffee production process and the plants, animals, and life in the area.

The guide takes you to one of the village homes, where you are welcomed by the family, and a short briefing about your activities for the day follows. You then get to pick the coffee beans, mill them to remove the coffee cherry, separate the dried husk from the bean, roast the beans, grind them, and enjoy the final product.

Thereafter, you walk through the village and plantations, seeing how the coffee plant is integrated into the forest/farms. Then follows lunch prepared with the farmer’s family. The tour takes you to the Kilimanjaro region, 30 minutes from Moshi town.

The farmers are members of Kilimanjaro Native Cooperative Union. The farmers are members of one of the oldest cooperative movements in Africa – Kilimanjaro Native Cooperative Union (KNCU). The objective of the Kahawa Shamba project is to generate additional income for its farmer members through the existing tourism industry in Kilimanjaro.

The farmers are well-trained to host the tourists in their respective villages.

Main Activities during coffee tour include;

* Coffee berry picking
* Coffee drinking at the farm
* A locally prepared lunch at the farm
* An excursion to a nearby coffee farm
* Processing of the coffee from bean to cup
* Single-origin coffee packets are available for sale at the farm
* Explanation about organic coffee farming and Fair-trade standards
