Kakamega is a town in western Kenya lying about 30 km north of the Equator. It is the headquarters of Kakamega County. Kakamega is 52 km north of Kisumu, the third largest city in Kenya and a port city on Lake Victoria.

Kakamega County is Kenya’s second most populous county after Nairobi. Kakamega was so named because the word “kakamega” translates roughly to “pinch” in Kiluhyah, which was used to describe how European colonists would eat the staple food, ugali. Local Inhabitants are mostly the Luhya tribe, whose economic activity is mainly farming and fishing.

Kakamega is certainly not a highly publicized destination, but it is an area of great geographic, cultural and natural diversity offering visitors just as much, if not more, than many of Kenya’s better known tourist areas.

Here is a list of some of the attractions in this evidently underrated and culturally rich region, Kakamega Forest Reserve, Nabongo Cultural Center, Ikhongo Murue, Rondo Retreat, Ilesi Pottery Project, Mawe Tatu, Lirhanda Caves, Hamptons City, Rosterman Mines, Nandi Escarpment, Bull Fighting,

Kakamega County has a decent variety of accommodation options, ranging from luxury hotels to low budget hotels. Among the best hotels in includes: Bishop Stam Pastoral Center, Bungoma Countryside Hotel, Diamond Rock Resort and Guest House, Farm view Hotel, Hotel Itoya, Siaya Guest House among others.
