Kampala Day Tour Ziwa Rhino Wildlife Ranch Trip
Kampala Day Tour Ziwa Rhino Wildlife Ranch Trip

Kampala Day Tour Ziwa Rhino Wildlife Ranch Trip is an exciting day safari to see White Rhinos in their natural habitat at the Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch located in Nakasongola district –  the proud home of the only wild rhinos in Uganda.

Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch are conveniently located 176 kilometers (100 miles) north of Kampala on the Gulu highway toward Murchison Falls. Ziwa is the only place where you will be able to see rhinos in the wild. Presently the sanctuary is home to fifteen (15) southern white rhinos.

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is run by Uganda Rhino Fund and Uganda Wildlife Authority. The sanctuary is not only home to the rhinos but also to approximately 20 other species of wildlife as well as 300 different bird species.

Uganda was the home of thousands of rhinos some years back and the main aim for establishing this Sanctuary was to restore the rhinoceros population in Uganda (Black and White). There are five species of rhino in the world – Two in Africa, and three in Asia all endangered and the success of Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary will play a key role in the eventual re-introduction of rhinos back into the wild in Uganda’s National Parks.

It is the only place in Uganda where you can see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. When the rhinos are mature, they are sent out to different national parks. Rhinos are slow breeders, giving birth to one calf every two to four years. These rhinos are the only wild rhinos in Uganda.

The sanctuary sits on 70 square Kilometers of land and it has electric fencing all around it for keeping the rhinos protected from the ill motives of intruders.

Kampala Day Tour Ziwa Rhino Wildlife Ranch Trip Itinerary

0700 Hours: After breakfast depart from your hotel/ residence and drive to the Rhino Sanctuary. About 3 hours northwest of Kampala on the road to Murchison Falls National Park is the Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch. The closest village is called Nakitoma.

1030 Hours: You arrive at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and get a safety briefing from the guide before setting out on foot trekking for Rhinos. You will get the opportunity to watch these endangered, magnificent creatures doing what rhinos do in their natural habitat.

As these rhinos are free to move around on 7000ha of land, it is more often than not necessary to drive to the area where the rhino is located before taking the bush walk. Depending on where the rhinos are located on the day you visit, your trek may last between 1½ Hours to 2½ Hours. You need to wear closed shoes, long pants, and insect repellent.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is home to a wide variety of animals, birds, and reptiles.  Your guide will share his knowledge of not only the animals but botany and vegetation as well. The rhino trek goes through grassland with some trees here and there.

Once you spot the rhinos, you will get about 30 feet from them and watch them eat and basically do their normal thing. A pair of binoculars and a good zoom lens will help you get good pictures. During the Rhino forest walk you will see many different species of birds, including pigeons, hornbills, storks, kingfishers, herons, bee-eaters, moosebirds, weavers, etc.

You might also see animals like wild hares, Mongoose, Colobus monkeys, Reedbuck, Bushbuck, Genet cats, Rhino, Seval cats, Uganda Kob, Warthog, Waterbuck, Oribi, and Porcupines, etc.

1300 Hours: Lunch is served at the Ziwa Restaurant or you may go to Kabalega Diner a few km outside the Ranch.

1400 Hours: With lunch done you will have time to visit some craft shops before leaving for Kampala.

1800 Hours: You arrive back in Kampala/ Entebbe where you are dropped off at your residence.
