0800 Hours: A guided walking excursion in Kisumu City is quite adventurous, you will be able to socialize and chat with locals. From your hotel, you will to walk to the Kisumu City Council hall then to Jomo Kenyatta Sports ground.
Jomo Kenyatta Sports ground acts as a sports Centre as well as social joint for both the youth the elderly. The sports grounds are a perfect place where locals come to cool off their feet catch up with the next appointment or read good books.
We visit Walter Edwin Owen Memorial park inside Jomo Kenyatta sports ground then proceed to the Kisumu Municipal Market. Just like Kibuye market, the Kisumu Municipal Market is one of the busiest markets, it operates throughout the week.
Kisumu is known for Tilapia, This is where to buy fresh fish ferried from all the ports of Lake Victoria. You can buy dried fish, fresh fish and smoked fish as well. You will see cereals, fresh vegetables, fruits, spices etc.
We proceed to the Masai Market and Oile Market located near the bus park where locals get most of the green groceries and second hand stuff.
Our walking tour takes us through Kisumu City Center to the pier (the ship docking bay) then to Kisumu railway station and to the Kisumu Museum.
The Kisumu Museum is a small yet comprehensive exhibit gallery and displays of material culture of the peoples of the Western Rift valley and Nyanza Province.
This includes traditional clothing and adornment, basketry, fishing gear, agricultural tools and hunting weaponry. Also on display are several dioramas, including a lion, De Brazza monkey, and the largest Nile Perch ever caught in Kenya.
The museum contains numerous pavilions with some of the pavilions containing: Live animals numerous aquaria with a wide variety of fish from Lake Victoria, along with explanatory posters Terrarium containing mambas, spitting cobras, puff adders and other venomous Kenyan snakes.
Beyond the exhibit gallery and Snake Park is a life-size replica of a traditional Luo homestead. This is a full-scale recreation of a traditional Luo homestead.
1300 Hours: The Kisumu Impala Sanctuary is next. It also provides a safe grazing area for hippos from the lake. Located just a Kilometer from Kisumu CBD, it lies close to Hippo Point and features 3 kilometers of nature trails and a selection of picnic sites.
The Sanctuary’s focus is herds of impalas and zebras which roam freely in the sanctuary. We proceed to Kiboko Bay Resort set on the shores of the majestic Lake Victoria. Enjoy a boat ride as you check out hippos and birds in their natural habitat.
If time permits we visit Dunga beach and a children’s’ orphanage.
1800 Hours: Return back to the hotel/ residence.
