Kivu Lodge is located on a small piece of land that juts into the calm waters of Lake Kivu in Karongi District. The lodge is located on a private peninsula on Lake Kivu, surrounded by a private coffee plantation.
Access to the lodge is off the main highway from Karongi to Kamembe. Turn right at Ngoma if driving from Karongi. Ngoma is 22 km from Karongi town and 89km from Kamembe town. The lodge also has a standard helipad on sight.
The flying time from Kigali International Airport to the lodge is 25 minutes. By private speed boat from Rubavu to the lodge is 2 hours while from Kamembe and Karongi it takes 1 1/2 hours by speed boat.
This is a rarely visited area, so you’ll be one of the first paying guests to enjoy watching the sunset over the lake or exploring the peninsula. Come if you’re craving some downtime, or if you’re heading from Nyungwe Forest to Volcanoes National Park. You’ll be welcomed warmly, enjoy good facilities, eat well, and savor stunning scenery.
The lodge boasts 20 spacious cottages, 2 of which are executive suites. It also has a restaurant, coffee bar, and lounge bar. It boasts an outdoor cascading swimming pool overlooking the waters of Lake Kivu. All the rooms offer stunning views of Lake Kivu. They also have private balconies. Electricity is currently powered by a generator. All cottages overlook the lake.
The main area is comfortable if rather sparsely, furnished, with a bar whose sliding doors open to the swimming pool, and the main dining area, also with doors opening to those wonderful views.
Before dinner, gather on chairs around the pool for snacks and drinks, then head indoors (or to tables outside if the weather is warm) for a really fresh, well-prepared meal. (The chocolate pancakes for dessert are superb.) The pool and its waterfall are attractively lit at night.
Activities available include; Relaxation in a tranquil environment, Local fishing, Swimming, Water sports, Sunset cruises on the Lake Kivu and dinner/cocktail parties aboard the Iliza, Visits to the coffee plantations and coffee tasting, Local cultural troupe dancing (intore), Visits to the local community & Visit the Bisesero Genocide.
