Kwihala Camp Ruaha National Park
Kwihala Camp Ruaha National Park is a classic, expedition-style six-tent camp that offers an intimate, exclusive safari experience in Ruaha National Park, Tanzania. The atmosphere is intimate, with just 12 guests hosted by an enthusiastic, warm, cohesive team.
The camp is located in the Game-rich and ecologically varied Ruaha National Park – the size of Wales and home to 10 percent of the world’s lion population. Kwihala is located in the north, near the palm-lined Mwagusi sand river, and within easy striking distance of the baobab-studded plains and rocky koppies favored by leopards.
Kwihala Camp Ruaha National Park is a low-key bush camp, is simple and rustic, furnished in a practical way, with sandy pathways leading to the six en-suite tents where the signature Kwihala baobab emblem appears on duvet covers and basins. It’s unfussy, comfortable, and laid-back; one of the most authentic tented safari experiences in Africa.
Again, this is a bush camp – forget the minibar or television; here solar-powered fans, in-room battery charging facilities, and flushing toilets are all much-appreciated luxuries. The ‘bucket’ showers, which operate much like normal ones, but involve staff heating water to fill large ‘geyser bags’ that are then hoisted up behind your tent, work perfectly. Tents are large and furnished with comfortable king-sized beds.
Kwihala strikes a great balance between wild camping and essential comforts, including exceptional hospitality standards and attention to detail. It’s certainly not suitable for anyone looking for hotel-like facilities – there’s no pool, spa, gym, room service, or activities outside of game viewing, but in addition to drives, Kwihala offers game walks and night drives (unusual in a National Park).
Head out on game drives to see elephants — the largest population in Tanzania is located here — and lions, known for hunting giraffes, buffalo, and even elephants. On foot, discover the smaller inhabitants of the bush and learn how to identify animal prints and dung.
At night, venture out with a spotlight to find nocturnal animals like bush babies and hyenas. Finish off the day around the campfire with a glass of wine under the glittering Milky Way. If you listen carefully, you hear the nearby Ikuka waterfall in the still night air and even spot a meteor shower in the pristine sky.
