Climbing Kilimanjaro on the Rongai Route

This Luxury Kilimanjaro Climbing 6 Days Rongai Route Hike follows the Rongai route, considered to be one of the easier routes up Kilimanjaro. This luxury climb offers medium-sized dome tents, thick mattresses and sleeping bags, and a separate loo tent. It is a great compromise between cost and comfort.

Rongai route has an excellent success rate that is 80% and is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the northern side, close to the Kenyan border. Though gaining popularity amongst climbers, this route still experiences low crowds.

You have to descend on the Marangu route on the southern side, so you get to see both sides of the mountain. Lying in the rain shadow of Kilimanjaro, the Rongai route is one of the best routes to attempt Kilimanjaro during the rainy season, as it sees substantially less rain than the southern routes.

This makes it a good choice for a trek all year round, but especially during the rainy season in April and May. The Rongai Route total distance is 72 kilometers with the longest day being the summit day at 21 km.

This Rongai Kilimanjaro Hiking Package starts with a transfer from Arusha or Moshi to the Kilimanjaro National Park Marangu Gate. At the park entrance, you are registered by the National Park authorities. Then a transfer a further 70 km (roughly 2.5 hours) to the Rongai Start Point at 1,950 meters.

You will pass through forest and moorland heading for your first night accommodation at Simba Camp at 2625m. Approximately 4-5 hours walking.

The following morning on day two, you ascend to Second Cave Camp in the moorland zone. From here you will be able to see Kibo, the highest of the three volcanoes which form Kilimanjaro. Approximately 3-4 hours walking.

On day three, you continue your steady ascent, entering into the semi-desert terrain. This relatively short hiking day brings you closer to the Easter ice fields, continually drawing your attention to their beauty, and stay at the Third Cave Camp. Approximately 3-4 hours walking.

Day four you depart from the Third Cave early in the morning and begin your trek into the Alpine Desert terrain for the remainder of your ascent. Today’s hike will take you just below the Kibo crater wall to the Kibo Huts. At this point, you will merge with the Marangu Route, which you will use to hike to the summit.

You will prepare your clothing and equipment (replace batteries for headlamp and camera) before you go to bed by 7 PM and try to catch a few hours of rest before your summit attempt. Approximately 5-6 hours walking.

On day five you will start the summit ascent around midnight. The trail follows a rocky path to Hans Meyer Cave at 5200 meters and slowly continues upwards along a zigzag path. Around sunrise, you should reach the crater rim of Kilimanjaro – Gillman’s Point – and possibly the most challenging section of the route.

After another 1-2 hours trekking and you will reach the summit, Uhuru Peak, at 5895 meters. From here you will return to Kibo Hut for a break and a warm meal before heading descending to Horombo Hut and your last night on the mountain. Approximately 12-15 hours walking.

On day 6 on the way from Horombu Hut, you will stop at Mandara Hut for lunch and then head for Marangu Gate where you will be met by your driver and returned to your hotel in Arusha bringing our Luxury Kilimanjaro Climbing 6 Days Rongai Route Hike to a close. Approximately 8 hours walking.
