1-Day Malindi Trip to the Gedi Ruins and the adjacent Kipepeo Butterfly Project Itinerary
0800 Hours: Depart Malindi for the 20-30 minute drive to Gedi
0830 Hours – 1030 Hours: Guided tour of the Gedi Ruins to learn about its mysterious abandonment.
1030 Hours – 1130 Hours: Visit the Kipepeo Butterfly Project to see the butterfly exhibit and honey processing
1200 Hours: Optional stop at the nearby Snake Park or return to Malindi for a Swahili lunch

Gedi Ruins National Monument Archaeological Site
A 12th-century Swahili village that was mysteriously abandoned some 600 years ago. Gede Ruins Museum is located 16 kilometers south of Malindi and approximately 90 kilometers northeast of Mombasa.
Wildlife: The ruins are heavily overgrown with indigenous forest, making it a prime spot to see Syke’s monkeys, the rare Golden-rumped elephant shrew, and owls hiding in old wells.
Kipepeo Butterfly Project
Kipepeo Butterfly Farm is situated at the entrance of the Gede Ruins National Monument. Kipepeo Butterfly Farm is a community initiative that enables surrounding communities to earn a living from the forest.
What to See: A live butterfly house featuring diverse species from the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest. You can observe the entire lifecycle, from eggs to pupae. Community Impact: The project provides sustainable income for local communities that breed butterflies for export to international museums
Best Time to Visit: Monday and Thursday mornings are ideal, as you can meet local farmers delivering pupae and honey
Entrance Fees: Separate from the ruins, typically around Ksh 100 for Citizens
At 0800 Hours, after breakfast at the hotel, we will pick you up and drive you to Gede Ruins. Once at the Gede Ruins Museum, you will spend about 2 hours with a local guide exploring the museum. A walk through the ruins will allow you to see the village mosque, stone houses, and large, picturesque stone houses.
Also, look out for the dried-up wells, drainage gutters, and well-planned-out right-angled city streets. Your Gedi Ruins encounter will not be complete till you encounter Sykes monkeys and the golden-rumped elephant shrew. As you curiously look out at the ancient wells, expect to be startled by owls!
This tour will also include a visit to the Kipepeo Butterfly Farm. The Kipepeo Market Place is located at the Gede Ruins National Monument, 20 kilometers south of the resort town of Malindi and near the world-famous Watamu Beach.
It is at the entrance to the Gede Ruins. Visit the Butterfly exhibition and admire the colorful butterflies of Arabuko Sokoke and other forests while you learn of their importance to local livelihoods and conservation.
On Monday and Thursday mornings, you can meet and talk with farmers as they deliver pupae and honey to the marketplace. Also, see how the honey and silk cloth are processed at the facilities.
At approximately 1230 Hours, enjoy lunch at a hotel in Malindi, then we will drop you off at your hotel/residence.

Local butterfly farmers sell the pupae abroad in exhibitions in the USA, Europe, and Japan. Gedi ruins are now a National Museum, heavily overgrown with beautiful indigenous forest trees.
