Malindi Museum Day Tour - Old Town | Vasco da Gama Pillar & Portuguese Chapel
Our Malindi Museum Day tour combines a visit to the Malindi Museum, a stroll through Malindi’s old town, a visit to Vasco da Gama’s pillar, and the Portuguese chapel.
The Museum is located east of Malindi town, next to Uhuru Gardens, along the seafront, and a few meters from Malindi jetty and Fish Market.
The museum also serves as an information center, where visitors can find more information about attractions and events in Malindi. You also get to visit the famous Vasco da Gama Pillar, which was erected by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama as a navigational aid in 1498.
The coral column, topped with a cross of Lisbon stone, is one of the most popular landmarks on the Kenyan Coast.
The other attraction you will visit, the Portuguese Chapel, was also built by Vasco da Gama and is the first Christian place of worship in East Africa.

Malindi Museum Day Tour combines a visit to the Malindi Museum, a stroll through Malindi’s old town, a visit to Vasco da Gama’s pillar, and the Portuguese chapel built before St. Francis Xavier visited Malindi in 1542.
Malindi Museum is located east of Malindi town, next to Uhuru Gardens on Uhuru Road, along the seafront, and a few meters from Malindi jetty and Fish Market. The museum doubles as an information center where visitors are able to find more information on attractions and happenings in Malindi.
The Malindi Museum building is dubbed as “House of Columns” and is believed to have been built by local traders and acted as a hospital until 1952 and then as the Malindi Fisheries Office.
Sir Richard Leakey then handed over the building to the National Museums of Kenya in 1999. With life-size models of humans, houses, musical instruments as well and household instruments, the Malindi Museum is indeed a reservoir of Swahili history.
There are also lots of written historical facts which are framed on the walls within the building. Many exhibits in the museum tell the story of Malindi especially the cast of a coelacanth fish which was caught off the coast of Malindi in 2001.
The earliest coelacanth fossils date back 400 million years ago. Enjoy our Malindi Museum Tour.
