Matemwe Lodge Zanzibar is located in the north-east of Zanzibar, surrounded by some of the best beaches of Zanzibar and opposite the well-known Mnemba atoll, a hotspot for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Matemwe’s exclusive location, away from the big hotels, gives the beaches a very private feeling. Beautiful fleets of fishermen in traditional wooden dhow boats sail past on their way to and from their fishing grounds.

Built from local materials and surrounded by beautiful lush gardens, each of the 12 spacious suites has a private veranda with a hammock and sofa and expansive views of the Indian Ocean with its constantly changing hues of blue. Here you can watch the fishermen head out every morning at dawn or listen to the songs of the village women as they harvest seaweed.

Matemwe Lodge Zanzibar has large bathrooms and has both a deep bathtub and walk-in shower and all beds are enclosed by mosquito nets. The open-air restaurant sits just above the sea and has a tranquil lounge area with beautiful views of the palm-fringed beach and gently rocking dhows.

Seafood is the specialty of the house, with all produce bought daily from the local markets. Lunch is a buffet offering a delicious mix of African and European flavors. Dinner offers a choice of main courses with fish, meat, and vegetarian options.

Matemwe Lodge Zanzibar has a multi-level swimming pool surrounded by lounge chairs overlooking the ocean. Freshly mixed cocktails are served at the poolside bar.

There is a One Ocean dive center located conveniently at our Matemwe water sports center on the property grounds. Diving & snorkeling conditions are excellent around the Mnemba atoll just off the coast from Matemwe

Snorkeling can be done both from Mate we’s beach and on a trip with Matemwe’s own wooden boats (at extra cost)

* Activities on the island: the island offers a range of excursions such as spice tours and visits to Stone Town or Jozani forest. Due to Matemwe’s secluded location, driving time can be an hour to these locations.
