Mivumo River Lodge

Mivumo River Lodge is set on the banks of the spectacular Rufiji River in Tanzania’s vast Selous Game Reserve. Mivumo River Lodge is 45 Minutes away by flight from Dar-es-Salaam to Stiegler’s Airstrip and 30 Minute transfer to the lodge. By road: there are two options: the first is from Dar es Salaam to Mkongo via Kibiti (250 km). The second is from Dar es Salaam to Kisaki via Morogoro (350km). Journey times vary but are approximately 9-10 Hours. 4WD is required throughout. By train: the reserve can be reached by train from Tazara stopping at Kisaki, which is about 5-6 hours from Dar es Salaam 

Mivumo River Lodge stands high on the banks of the slow, brown Rufiji River, with glorious views down to the plunging torrents of Stiegler’s Gorge and offers just twelve luxurious rooms, each of which is housed in a timbered chalet with a private viewing deck and plunge pool. 

Traditionally thatched, with high vaulted ceilings and picture windows, each room features an engaging mix of classic safari antiques and ultra-modern leather and rattan-styled furniture. Softly lit and breeze-cooled, the lodge offers the ultimate escape to one of the world’s last undiscovered wilderness frontiers. 

Mivumo River Lodge overlooks the Rufiji River, the spacious central dining room, lounge, library, and bar each have their own spacious timber and thatched chalets, which are interconnected by broad wooden walkways offering excellent views of the hippos and elephants of the riverbank. 

High on the river bank is a spectacular ‘infinity’ pool and sundeck; also an exclusive aromatherapy spa, where a wide range of entirely natural massages, scrubs, and body wraps are offered. Vast, pristine, and largely undiscovered, the spectacular Selous Game Reserve is a World Heritage Site and the largest expanse of game reserve in Africa. 

Covering 55,000 square kilometers of rolling savannah, lakes, rivers, and deltas, it is four times the size of the Serengeti and larger than the entire nation of Switzerland. Home to the largest concentrations of elephants in the world, this unique wildlife arena also boasts some of the most exclusive and pioneering boating safaris that Africa has to offer.

* Children under 7 Years are not permitted at Mivumo River Lodge
* Mivumo River Lodge Villas can only be booked exclusively (Maximum 6 Adults)
* Young adults 13 years to 17 years are charged 75% of the per-person adult rate
* A child 7-12 years sharing a room with an adult is charged 50% of the per-person adult rate
* Children and young adults 7 years to 17 years occupying their own room are charged 75% of the adult per person rate (per child)  

Mivumo River Lodge Rooms

Mivumo exclusive River Lodge offers only 12 exclusive rooms. Widely spaced amongst the indigenous forest, each is accommodated in its own wildwood chalet, whose brushwood thatched roof is high vaulted to allow maximum play of light and breeze. 

Slightly raised on sprung wooden floors, each room features a charming mix of Edwardian crystal chandeliers, marble basins, classic safari antiques and subtly understated modern leather and rattan furniture. Mivumo River Lodge’s spacious and opulent country-house-inspired bathrooms also feature an exterior shower with wilderness views. 

Each room has its own extensive private sun deck, loungers, plunge pool, and river views. Room facilities include:

Mivumo River Lodge Dining

Mivumo River Lodge is slightly raised on timber decks above the famous Rufiji River; the open-sided dining room offers a selection of exclusive seating areas, an elegant library, a charming lounge, and a safari bar. 

All overlook the river with uninterrupted views of the hippos, elephants, and crocodiles that congregate on its banks. 

Mivumo River Lodge breakfast and lunch are presented buffet-style and feature a wide range of international choices. In typical safari style, we offer a ‘full English Breakfast’ as well as European options while our lunch menus will typically include meat, poultry, fish, and vegetarian options. 

Mivumo River Lodge table d’hôte dinner menus feature a salad buffet, soup, entrée, pudding, cheese and biscuits, and tea or coffee. Vegetarian options are always available. The majority of Mivumo River Lodge’s meat and dairy products, as well as fruits and vegetables, are sourced from the communities that surround the reserve.
