Malindi is about 120 km from Mombasa Island, and the drive takes about an hour and a half. The tour begins in Malindi (or Watamu upon request) at 0600 Hours and drives south past Watamu, Kilifi, and Mtwapa, arriving in Mombasa.
Once in Mombasa at about 0930 Hours, your tour will focus on the city’s main attractions. You begin by exploring the old town, visiting Elephant Tusks
and walk along narrow streets and visit the old harbor to see traditional Arabic boats and one of the oldest mahindry mosques near the harbor.
Proceed to the market, where you will learn about spices, foods, and vegetables. Meet traders buying and selling a variety of goods, and visit Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in 1593 by an architect from Goa. It later became a government prison during the British colonial period in 1947.
If there is time, visit the Akamba handicrafts (where you will learn about the wood carvings). Akamba Handcraft is one of Kenya’s largest wood-carving industries and markets.
Thereafter, visit the Indian temple where you will learn about Hinduism, Lord Swaminarayan, and Lord Rama. You will also have the opportunity to see the elephant tusks, which are located along Moi Avenue and were built in 1952 in memory of King George of England during the British colonial period.
At about 1230 Hours, you will proceed to lunch at the center of Mombasa city or, by request, at Tamarind restaurant, located on the northern coast, overlooking the Indian Ocean. After lunch, visit Haller Park, where you can feed the giraffes and watch crocodiles and hippos feed.
