Mount Kenya Climb 1-Day Hike Naro Moru Route is a guided one-day hike that climbs Mount Kenya (around the base) providing a rewarding experience for those with limited time to visit. The tour begins with a pick-up at your residence at 0600 hours followed by a 3.5-hour drive from Nairobi (190 km) to Naru Moru park gate. After starting from the Park Gate at 2400m ASL), follow the dirt road that takes you through the tropical forest zone followed by the bamboo zone for 9km till Met Station at 3050m ASL. It may take you roughly 6 hours for the round trip to Met Station. 

Along the hike, you are likely to see a variety of birds and wild animals such as elephants, buffalo, giant forest hogs, waterbucks, bushbucks, tree hyrax, bongo antelope, leopard, baboon, warthog, and Colobus monkeys commonly found in the forest zone. The highlight of the hike is reaching the edge of the alpine forest into the moorland and bog so as to get a closer and clearer view of the Mt Kenya peaks – Nelion and Batian. The peaks are clear most of the day unless in cloudy weather.

You hike up between 200-400 meters from the Meteorological Station. The climb takes 4-5 hours. Descending the mountain using the same route takes you 1.5 hours and you will arrive at the Meteorological Station by 1500 hours. Drive back to the Naro Moru gate by 1500hrs and start the drive back to Nairobi. You need to be reasonably fit to do this all-day hike.

Mount Kenya Climb 1 Day Hike Naro Moru Route is designed for guests who have limited time and who are not interested in reaching any of the summits. This 1-day safari from Nairobi is tailored to those who are interested in seeing the fascinating vegetation zones of an equatorial mountain and the associated rich animal and birdlife.

Naru Moru route is the closest to Nairobi, with Naru Moru Park Gate situated about 175 km from Nairobi and 15 km from Naru Moru town. Naru Moru route is therefore the natural choice for a day hike on Mount Kenya if you are coming from Nairobi.

The forest surrounding the mountain support a large variety of wildlife such as elephant, buffalo, monkey, antelope, lion, zebra, eland, rock hyrax, giant forest hogs, leopard, and various species of birds such as eagle, vulture, and Sunbird among others.

0600 Hours: Our Mount Kenya Climb 1-Day hike (using the Naro Moru route) departs from your hotel/ residence in Nairobi for Naru Moru Gate (Mount Kenya). We arrive at the Naru Moru Park Gate of Mount Kenya national park. Here you will have photo opportunities of some wildlife such as bushbuck, waterbuck, baboons, and birdlife.

0900 Hours:  Arrive at the Naro Moru gate and check into Mount Kenya National park. Continue driving to the Meteorological station camp located at an altitude of 3,000 meters. At the camp, there are a lot of different types of vegetation and the guides will explain more about it.

0930 Hours: Take your packed lunch and start a leisurely pace trekking up the mountain. You will walk through different vegetation from bamboo forest, hagenia trees to heathers trees and the beginning of a moorland covered by tussock grass and flowered cabbage roberias, also great views of lowland and Aberdare ranges.

1030 Hours: Climb up the rain forest observing the scenery and animals. Along the way, you will enjoy the enriched forest of birdlife and flowers at high altitudes. After 3 to 4 hours of ascending you will be on top of Teleki valley where we have picnic rocks which will be our lunch spot (3,700 meters).

1300 Hours: Enjoy your lunch with great views. After lunch, continue hiking to the crest of the ridge at 4,000 meters to a vantage point from where you have splendid views of the main peaks of Mount Kenya as well as the Teleki Valley. Take pictures of the peaks Nelion and Batian and take in the scenery.

1400 Hours: You will then descend down to Met. Station (2 to 3 hours) where we will find our transport waiting to take you back to Nairobi. (If you are returning to Nairobi, you will be back at around 1900 hours on the same day).

1530 Hours: Depart from the park gate and drive back to Nairobi.

1900 Hours:Drop off at the airport or at your hotel/lodge for a hot shower and a well-earned rest.
