Climb Kilimanjaro Marangu Route

This 5-day Kilimanjaro Trek follows the Marangu Route, the easiest and shortest route to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Marangu Route is sometimes called the “Coca Cola” and is the oldest and most popular route up Mount Kilimanjaro.

The Marangu route is unique in offering the luxury of sleeping huts at all of the camp stops along the way. The Mandara and Kibo Huts have 60 beds each and the Horombo Hut sleeps, 120 people. The huts are equipped with comfortable bunk beds each with a sponge mattress and pillow.

The huts on the Marangu trail are communal and are fitted with solar-powered lights. The bathrooms of the huts lower down on the slopes feature running water. There are various beverages on sale along the Marangu Route to quench the thirst of climbing hikers. Bottled water, soft drinks, and even beer are usually available at the huts.

Meals are taken in shared dining huts where several climbing groups from various countries across the globe get to meet up. These social mealtimes on the Marangu route are fun and lively occasions.

Day one of this Kilimanjaro Hike begins with a transfer from Arusha/ Moshi to the Kilimanjaro National Park where we complete the necessary paperwork before starting our hike up Mt. Kilimanjaro. After a 4-hour walk, we reach our first overnight stop, the Mandara Hut (2670m). Here we rest before visiting Maundi Crater with our mountain guide.

From the crater, we enjoy wonderful views of the Kenyan interior, before returning to Mandara Hut for dinner and our overnight stay.

On day two, we continued our Marangu Hike up Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. We hike for about 4 – 6 hours to reach the Horombo Hut, at an altitude of 3700m. We will have dinner and stay overnight at Horombo Hut, admiring the spectacular views over Mawenzi, Kibo, and the vast plains of the Masai steppe.

On day three, a challenging trek awaits us today, lasting about 5 – 6 hours. Our destination is Kibo Hut. Today the Kilimanjaro Hike takes us through a barren plateau joining the main summit Kibo with Mawenzi.

Day four is the most exciting day on our Marangu Hike as we will reach the summit of Kilimanjaro! We hike for about 6 – 8 hours to reach the highest point of Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak. Standing at 5895m on Uhuru Peak you will be rewarded with magnificent sweeping views of the lower slopes of Africa’s tallest mountain and the landscapes below.

Here you experience the inspiring sense of achievement at having climbed to the “Roof of Africa”!

We retrace our steps following the same trail back down Kilimanjaro. We make for a speedy descent to Kibo Hut, where a warm meal and welcome from the mountain team await you. We continue our Marangu hike to Horombo Hut (3720m), arriving in the afternoon. The evening meal is followed by a well-deserved early night!

On day five, we take the final stretch of this Kilimanjaro trek where we descend to the Mandara Hut at 2700m. After a warm lunch at Mandara Hut, we head back into the tropical rainforest reaching the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m) after 6 hours of trekking today.

At the gate, we say goodbye to our mountain guides and transfer back to Arusha or Moshi bringing your memorable 5-Day Climb Kilimanjaro Marangu Route to a close.

Safari Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: Drive to Kilimanjaro National Park Marangu Gate (1860 Meters/ 6100 Feet), Hike to Mandara Hut (2700 Meters/ 8875 Feet)

After breakfast and briefing, drive to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (about 1 hour), register, and commence the climb. Walk through the rainforest to the Mandara encampment.

A side trip to Maundi Crater is a good way to see the surroundings including Northern Tanzania and Kenya. In the rainforest, look for towering Eucalyptus trees, bird life, and Colobus monkeys.

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours and the Distance covered is 8 Kilometers/ 5 Miles through Montane Forest.

Overnight at Mandara Hut
Meal Plan:
 {Lunch and Dinner}

Day 2 : Hike Mandara Hut (2700 Meters/ 8875 Feet) to Horombo Hut (3700 Meters/ 12,200 Feet)

You leave the glades of the rainforest and follow an ascending path on the open moorlands to the Horombo encampment.

Views of Mawenzi and the summit of Kibo are amazing. Look for giant lobelias and groundsels. You may begin to feel the effects of the altitude.

Hiking Time: 5-6 hours and the Distance covered is 12 Kilometers/ 7.5 Miles through Heathland.

Overnight at Horombo Hut
Meal Plan:
 {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 3: Hike Horombo Hut (3700 Meters/ 12,200 Feet) to Kibo Hut (4700 Meters/ 15,500 Feet)

Ascending, we now pass the last watering point, walking onto the saddle of Kilimanjaro between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi.

Vegetation begins with upper heathland but then disappears into “moonscape”. Dinner, rest and prepare for the summit climb.

Hiking Time: 5-6 hours and the Distance covered is 9 Kilometers/ 5.5 Miles through the Alpine Desert.

Overnight at Kibo Hut
Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 4 : Hike Kibo Hut (4700 Meters/ 15,500 Feet) to Summit, and down to Horombo Hut (3700 Meters/ 12,200 Feet)

Very early in the morning (midnight to 0200 Hours), commence the climb to the summit on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilman’s point located on the crater rim.

Continuing, we now ascend to Uhuru Peak, (5895 Meters/ 19,340 Feet) which is the highest point in Africa. There are unbelievable views at every turn.

Have your picture taken at the summit to show your friends and family. From here we descend, stopping for lunch and a rest at Kibo before continuing on to the Horombo encampment.

The beginning of this climb is done in the dark and requires headlamps or flashlights. It will be very cold until you start descending, so you will need all of your warm layers.

This is by far the most difficult part of the trek with many switchbacks. Going slowly “pole pole” and having an optimistic attitude will get you there!

Hiking Time: 6-8 hours and the Distance covered is 6 Kilometers/ 4 Miles up and 15 Kilometers/ 9 Miles down through the Alpine Desert.

Overnight at Horombo Camp
Meal Plan:
 {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 5: Hike Horombo Hut (3700 Meters/ 12,200 Feet) to Marangu Gate (1700 Meters/ 5500 Feet), drive to Moshi/ Arusha

After breakfast, a steady descent takes us down through moorland to the Mandara Hut. Continue descending through a lush forest path to the National Park gate at Marangu.

At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).

A vehicle will meet you at Marangu village to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 1 hour). Don’t forget to tip your guides and porters. It is time for celebration!

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours and the Distance covered is 20 Kilometers/ 12.5 Miles
