A short and rewarding 1-day Hiking Trek up Mount Meru in Tanzania. The tour begins and ends in Arusha and you trek up the direct route up to Miriakamba Hut. Mount Meru is in Arusha National Park, situated east of the Great Rift Valley and about 40 km southwest of Kilimanjaro mountain.
The mountain is about an hour’s drive from Arusha town, to Momela Gate (1514 meters/ 4967 feet), the main entrance, then drive 15 km inside the park to the starting point, for the Mt. Meru climb.
You depart Arusha and head to Arusha National Park in the morning, to begin our trek up Mount Meru. Upon arrival at the entrance gate of Arusha National Park, your guide completes the necessary paperwork and continues to the nearby Momella Gate. Day hikers can easily trek up the direct route to Miriakamba Hut. It takes 4 – 5 hours depending on your stamina and pace.
The hike starts at Momella Gate of Arusha National Park at 1,500 meters and treks up to Miriakamba Hut at 2,500 meters. During our 1 day hike up Mount Meru, trekkers get to see distant views of Mt. Kilimanjaro at a distance and animals such as Buffalo, Giraffe, Warthog, Dik-dik, Monkeys, etc.
Birds likely to be seen include Turacos, Hornbills, and Butterflies such as the Golden-winged forester, and Mocker Swallow tailed among others.
For the first scenic leg of the hike, an armed park ranger accompanies us through the game territory, helping to spot any roaming giraffes and Buffalos in the area. From there we hike into the acacia forest, following the Southern Route up the slopes.
A steady two-hour-long climb brings us to Maio Falls and its lovely pastures. From the falls we hike to the ‘Arched Fig Tree’ a well-known attraction that your ranger tells us more about. Learn how the tree formed its arched shape, framing our path.
We walk on for another one and a half hours or so until we get to the Miriakamba Hut. At Miriakamba Hut you have a picnic lunch and some rest, then begin descending through the outer route which is an easier hike down to the Momella Gate taking approximately 3 hours, passing through game viewing land.
Keep a lookout for wildlife, including Elephants, Buffalos, Giraffes, and black and white Colobus Monkeys, as we cover the final leg of our hike. Reaching the gate, we say goodbye to the guide and depart from Arusha National Park and transfer to Arusha where our Mount Meru 1-day Hiking Tour ends.
Hiking Itinerary in Detail
0700 Hours: Depart Arusha town after breakfast at your hotel/ residence and drive to Mount Meru in Arusha National Park. The drive takes about 40 minutes to get to Momella Gate.
0800 Hours: Complete registration formalities, thereafter we begin our trek (3 to 4 hours walking) guided by a park ranger and a local guide following the track through the forest to the crater floor and then steeply to Miriakamba Hut (2514 meters). Along the way look out for Giraffes, Warthog, Buffalo, Antelopes, and other grazers.
The going is tough because of the steepness but with a glance back over your shoulder, the views are spectacular across the Momella Lakes to Mount Kilimanjaro.
1300 Hours: Picnic lunch and a good rest at Miriakamba Hut. Afterward, descend by the Outer route which is an easier hike down to the gate approximately 3 hours.
1700 Hours: We should reach Momella Gate by late noon (2-3 hours walking).
1900 Hours: Once you reach the Gate end of the climb transferred back to Arusha.
