Mount Olorgesailie Lake Magadi 1 Day Hiking Tour is a full day trip to hike/ climb Mt. Olorgesailie located along Magadi road, (70 km away) about 1 “an hour and a half” drive from the Nairobi Central Business District.
Mt. Olorgesailie is 1760 Meters/ 5774 Feet above seas level and was named after a renowned Maasai elder who used to meditate and hold meetings with village elders up the mountain.
Its proximity to Nairobi makes it an attractive location for a day hike up the mountain. Our day hike begins at the Olorgesailie pre-historic site – world-renowned as the “factory of stone tools” and the only place in the world with the largest number.
Olorgesailie pre-historic site is in a lake basin that existed about 100,000 to 200’000 years ago.
Researchers, Dr and Mrs Leakey started investigations on the site in 1942 where they found important evidence that concerns the habits and activities of early prehistoric peoples of the Acheuleus or “Handaxe” culture.
Olorgesailie has excellently preserved biological and cultural evidence about the evolution of man. Museum and site- the museum interprets the pre-historic site. One can then take a walk to see the actual site and the discoveries made here.
Once at the foothill of the mountain, you will have a briefing session from the guide about the climb. The hike is considered moderate and takes about 6 hours round trip through rocky trails with thorny bushes in hot weather.
On average it takes 3 hours to ascend and the same to descend best climbed from 0500 Hours. The trail starts and ends at the prehistoric site.
A number of dry rivers crisscross the landscape as they wind their way from the upper reaches of the mountain down to the long-extinct lake at the pre-historic site.
Well camouflaged Maasai Manyattas and encounters with the occasional herdsmen tending to their flocks of goats and sheep provide a welcome distraction from the scorching sun.
The trails disappear in the last steep section of the climb before you get to the summit. The descent then takes another 3 hours to get back to the pre-historic site.
