Mwea National Reserve Day Trip Safari is a 3 hour journey to Mwea National Reserve about 180 kilometers from Nairobi. The reserve is located northwest of Kamburu Dam at the Mwea National Reserve within Mbeere in Eastern Province – Embu County.
Our Mwea National Reserve Day Trip Safari departs at 0530 Hours to Mwea National Reserve. We take the Nairobi -Thika – Matuu -Masinga Dam road. Despite the traveling and an early departure, this small reserve, 42 square kilometers is essentially undeveloped and undisturbed.
The reason for this is because of its location and is rarely visited by tourists; consequently you will find it a place of calm and tranquility enabling you to view the reserves with plentiful wildlife in perfect peace.
Game viewing, boat rides at the Kamburu Dam, walking (walking circuit) and hippo sighting at Hippo point is the key highlights in the reserve. Once at the park one can take a boat ride on Masinga and Kamburu dam which is fun and fantastic.
On your game drive you will likely see elephants, Rothschild giraffes, zebras, kudu, Buffalo, Water Buck, Bush buck, Impala and Vervet Monkeys. Other animals include Aardvark, Yellow baboons, Grants gazelle, Dik dik, Cape hare, Warthog, Black backed jackal, Duiker, Sykes monkeys, Genet cat etc.
Hippos and crocodiles are also found in the dams and rivers. Birds and reptile species have been recorded in the reserve. With more than 200 species of birds, Mwea is renowned for water birds and waders. It is the only protected area where the endangered Hindes babbler can be found.
The Reserve also shelters two other rare species – Pel’s fishing owl and the white-backed night heron. Other additional attractions within the Reserve on Tana River that one can see Adamson Falls and Mutonga Grand Falls.
Also there are a number of hydro electric power dams which include Kamburu, Kiambere, Masinga, Gitare and Kindaruma, much of Kenya’s electricity is produced at these dams.
We enjoy our picnic lunch at the Gichuki Island Picnic site or the Hippo Point Picnic site. Later we depart the park with a game drive en-route back to Nairobi.
