Nairobi National Park Sunset & Night Game Drive
Nairobi Night Game Drive Safari offers you an opportunity to explore Nairobi National Park on a thrilling night game drive. Our Nairobi Night Game Drive Safari is a must for travelers seeking a unique Big 4 (lion, leopard, Cape buffalo, and rhinoceros) safari experience in a more secluded bush setting, bringing you closer to nature.
The sunset & night safari game drive trip starts in Nairobi at 1800 hours, where you will be collected from your hotel and transferred to Nairobi National Park. Once it is dark, our exploration begins using spotlights to find the nocturnal wildlife such as civets, bushbabies, bats, hares, genets, wild cats, and porcupines.
Easily seen animals include zebra, wildebeest, giraffes, jackals, hyenas, lions, rhinos, and buffalo. In the park, you travel on dirt roads, encountering far fewer vehicles on your game drive. Some of the more elusive wild animals in this park include leopards, cheetahs, bat-eared foxes, badgers, aardvarks, and caracal and serval cats. You can spot a variety of antelope species, such as dik-dik, Coke’s hartebeest, Impala, and eland, on the night game drive.
The four-hour night game drive is conducted in a safari mini-van with a pop-up hatch roof for game viewing & photography opportunities. You will return to your residence around 2300 hours, where you will be dropped off, bringing this fantastic Nairobi night Safari to an end.
Guests can also compare it with other Nairobi National Park activities, such as daytime game drives, rhino viewing, birdwatching, and scenic stops. The night game drive is also among the several tour options we offer to experience Nairobi National Park.
Why It Is Worth It
✓ Ecological Action: Even without dramatic predator scenes, the ecosystem feels more “alive” as animals move with purpose and forage actively
✓ The Atmosphere: Cooler temperatures, the park’s quiet, spotlight eye-shine moments, and nocturnal calls create an unforgettable atmosphere
✓ Efficiency: If you have just one free evening in Nairobi, this is the highest-value wildlife experience available, moving you from the city to the savannah in minutes
Safari Limitations
✓ Photography is Challenging: Low light means your eyes see less detail, photography is difficult, and flash is often restricted for ethical reasons
✓ Timing is Critical: The prime game drive window is between 1800 Hours and 2200 Hours. We do not offer shared group safaris to avoid losing valuable time to multiple city pick-ups
✓ No Guaranteed Big Cats: Night visibility is harder, and predators do not follow schedules. If your happiness depends entirely on seeing a lion or leopard, pair this with a morning drive
Wildlife Sightings
Species activity often peaks during dusk and before dawn. While Nairobi National Park hosts over 100 mammal and 500 bird species, the list below highlights the most realistic and rewarding targets for a night safari.
High-Likelihood Sightings
These species are frequently encountered or behaviorally active at dusk and night, making them strong spotlighting targets.
Mammals
✓ Common Warthog: Actively feeds after the sun goes down
✓ African Buffalo: Watch for movement and wallowing raids after dusk
✓ White Rhinoceros: A large herbivore likely to be visible near the plains after dark
✓ Black Rhinoceros: Often moves into open feeding areas during the cooler periods
✓ Spotted Hyena: The headline act of a night drive. Highly social, vocal, and far more active and interesting at night
Birds
✓ Black-crowned Night-Heron: Active at dusk around the park’s waterholes
✓ Spotted Nightjar & Eurasian Nightjar: Nocturnal ground birds often seen low-flying or flushed from roadsides
Medium-Likelihood Sightings
These species occur in the park and have nocturnal or crepuscular habits, but require some effort and careful scanning to spot.
Mammals
✓ Serval: A night predator hunting small mammals
✓ Leopard: Nocturnal, but highly solitary and elusive
✓ Lion: Often more active near dusk and dawn; spotlighting increases chances of viewing
✓ Black-backed Jackal: Opportunistic feeder with nighttime and early morning activity
✓ Common Genet & Crested Porcupine: Small, nocturnal animals often active after sunset
Birds
✓ Pearl-spotted Owlet: A small owl occasionally heard or seen
✓ Spotted Thick-knee: A nocturnal wader often encountered near the tracks
Low-Likelihood Sightings (Rare)
These nocturnal or elusive species are documented in the region but are unlikely to be seen on regular night drives without specialized tracking.
✓ Birds: Marsh Owl, African Grass Owl
✓ Mammals: Cheetah (primarily diurnal but may relocate in low light), African Civet, Lesser Bushbaby
Day Safari vs Night Safari in Nairobi National Park
A night game drive offers a completely different ecological window and sensory experience than a daytime safari. It serves as a specialized complement to a day drive, rather than a substitute.
The Day Safari: Broad Visibility & Classic Scenery
✓ Strengths: Classic open-plains game viewing, rhino tracking, birding, and skyline photography
✓ The Experience: Built on long-range scanning across open habitats and observing daytime grazing patterns
✓ Primary Goal: The most comprehensive introduction to the park’s major mammals, landscapes, and conservation landmarks
The Night Safari: Atmosphere & Ecological Behavior
✓ Primary Goal: A rarer, more secretive, and highly behavior-driven wildlife experience
✓ Strengths: After-dark atmosphere, nocturnal movement, active hyenas, and potential predator behavior
✓ The Experience: Relies on spotlight-assisted observation, eye-shine, sound, and tracking the altered rhythms of nocturnal emergence
Highlights
✓ Exclusive & Direct: Operated strictly without shared group city pick-ups to ensure you do not lose any of the prime 1800–2200 hours game-viewing window
✓ Dedicated Safari Vehicle: Conducted in a purpose-built safari minivan featuring a pop-up hatch roof to maximize game-viewing opportunities and spotlight visibility
✓ Uncrowded Wilderness: Enjoy a deeply secluded bush setting, traveling on dirt roads with far fewer vehicles than daytime safaris for an intimate connection to nature
✓ Behavior-Driven Safari: Shift the focus from classic open-plains sightseeing to witnessing active foraging, predator emergence, and the atmospheric sounds of the night
✓ After-Dark Exploration: Experience a thrilling night game drive in Nairobi National Park, utilizing spotlights to uncover the savannah’s hidden nocturnal ecology and altered rhythms
✓ Highly Efficient Timing: Running from 1800 to 2300 hours (including hotel transfers), it offers the ultimate high-value wildlife experience for those with just one free evening in the city
✓ The Big 4 & Night Dwellers: Track the Big 4 (lion, leopard, Cape buffalo, and rhinoceros) alongside elusive nocturnal species like bushbabies, civets, genets, and highly active spotted hyenas

It’s a completely different world. Lions sleep all day and hunt in the evening; most cats are active just before and after sunset, and that is when we take our guests on night game drives.
With a spotter and a light, we look and listen for the animals; it’s an amazing experience. Animal behavior is quite different at night, so observing animals in the dark is a big part of our night safaris.
Our Nairobi Night Game Drive in Nairobi National Park is led by experienced driver-guides in our safari cruisers or Land Cruisers, fitted with powerful lights for proper sightseeing at night.
The powerful game spotting spotlights and a game spotter or game ranger in the vehicle help you to see animals such as hippos, porcupines, civet cats, white-tailed mongoose, aardvarks, cape hares, rhino, leopard, lion, giraffe, topi, wildebeest, zebra, eland, hartebeest, night owls, hare, dik-dik, among many others.
